Tasted during a sublime BYOB, the 15th of February 2025, at Koetshuis Heven, Rheden During this I followed again a Japanse Whisky Masterclass, organized by Niels Viveen, all profit going to the charity! smoke, meat, vanilla, lychees, light peat too. The cask and spirit are nicely balanced.

This is a great alternative to the smoky Scotch whiskies. It's not as overly smoky and peated, yet it has even a perfumed side with blossom, fruit. It gives you sensations of sweet and salt and has great balance.

Appearance: Pale to medium gold. Nose: Deep smoke and ash. Apple, pear, caramel. Palate: Lemon, grapefruit, ash, iodine, caramel, light vanilla. Finish: Ashy, smoky, lemon and citrus zest. Overall: Lots of peat in here, both smoke and the ashier parts, rather light on barrel character. Light and crisp.

Clean and vibrant, with a fresh, piney lift—lemon peel, mint, and cool stream-like minerality, edged by distant campfire smoke, tangerines, and a hint of tobacco. On the palate it’s a standout: complex yet precise, layering citrus, gentle smoke, buttery richness, and damp forest floor into something immersive and alive. The long, balanced finish lingers on pine needles, pebbles, dried orange peel, and spiced biscuits, with a touch of funky old raisins. Distinctive, slightly sharp, and seriously impressive. I love this one! Complex and funky. I am funky. Only by drinking this dram. My second Saburomaru. First one was the blend. This one is The Empress. III. And yes, my empress, I do bow the head! Thank you!

Нос	87	Clean scent with something fresh- like the fresh little trees one hangs in his / hers car. Pine (or is it my mind projecting things now?) and a hint of mint. Lemon peel. Cleaning agent. Pebbles in the stream. Water. Whiff of smoke. Campfire in the distance and the smell that has been blown here by the wind. Tangerine. And tobacco, and lavender.
Вкус	87	On the palate, wauw. Just wauw. Complex and well made with lemon peel and tangerines and a whiff of smoke and the distant campfire and pebbles- it's all here in my mouth. I taste it. I feel it. I absorp it. Butter. And also humid, forest floor. And the feet of Japanese woman being eaten clean by the tiny little fish in a nail salon. Lemon peel again. My mind wanders off. This is good stuff! I like it!
Финиш	86	The finish is long and very balanced and I have deep respect for this dram. Wauw! Forest floor with a kick to it, lemon peel and pine needles and something crisp and pine cones and pebbles again- sucking on pebbles and building up saliva in your oral cabin untill you have enough saliva and then you swallow the whole, the funky mix of whisky and saliva and dried orange peel, soldier biscuits, and old stinky raisins.
