What a charming, complex whisky! It may be difficult if not impossible to do better with post-1984 Caol Ila. TL;DR: The best and fastest way to describe this is it's like a big bro to those around 10yo sherry Caol Ilas Signatory released a few years ago, for example cask 316658. The price (around 250€), although decidedly high, seems almost fair in the whisky world of 2023 where I can find Caol Ila 25yo OB going for 245€ in a tax free. I bought a second bottle for the future after just a few glasses from the first one.

I let it breathe in the jar for 40 minutes because I found it a bit closed at first. I took a slightly larger dram at around 50ml. That was a good decision because it wasn't until the third sip that I was able to really feel and describe the whisky. I think it builds from the nose to the taste to the crowning finish. I find that very exciting and have never felt that way before. It makes you want to try it again soon because it is totally exciting.

Compared to Caol Ila GM 96 (215650), this whisky is fruitier (raspberry cream/berries) on the nose. Big class. In terms of taste, it is an absolute powerhouse. The 60% spread brutally on the tongue: dryness, slight sweetness, peat, tears. A whisky that can still be felt after brushing your teeth. With water, the nose becomes creamier and softer. Unfortunately, the charming and perfume-like berries are lost. In the taste, the strong dryness and the intense wood are tamed and more fruit and a lot of salt are revealed. Everything in the background is reminiscent of pastries (raspberry cake and pretzel sticks). On the other hand, the Caol Ila GM 96 (215650) differs mainly in its cold ash/smoke structure, paired with the rather fresher sweetness. In the mouth, the whisky is smoother without water and appears more mature. A whisky for cold rainy days. My wife's favourite. More of a contender for summer evenings, this Caol Ila is my winner. Both bottlings require attention, time and rest. A quick tasting does not do justice to whiskys of this quality. I bought two bottles for €250 each and for 2023 that feels almost fair. Whisky at a high level.

A really tasty whisky. I just don't like the slightly ashy undertone. Otherwise a nice Caol Ila.
A wonderful Caol Ila that seems almost perfect to me. Round and harmonious, rich and complex together with the cold smoke and the slightly mineral note... it has everything I love about Caol Ila. I've drunk it undiluted so far, the 60.7% provides a little fire in the first two sips, but by the third the spiciness fades into the background and the warmth takes over. Smell, taste or finish, which is very long with changing impressions... I can't say in which area the whisky is better... therefore I see it at 92 points in all. This may seem a bit high to some but that's where my love for Caol Ila comes into play.
Whiskynotes: 91/100 Nose: hey, great! Classic dried meats and tobacco notes with a lovely refreshing hint of menthol. Juicy apples, tart cranberry and raspberry in the background with nice barbecue smoke, herbal oils, citrus peels and a hint of petrol. Whiffs of cold coffee as well. Lovely. Mouth: warm sooty notes with smoked meats and smouldering beach bonfires. Port Ellen? Scorched rosemary, as well as fruitcake, red berries, red apples, plums and oranges. Then also After Eight, caramel notes, black pepper and hints of salt. Roasted almonds and praline too. A great profile. Finish: long, warming, with savoury notes, herbs and smoked meat. When you read tobacco notes, sour berries, chocolate and sooty smoke, then you know I’m in a happy place. This is a lovely Caol Ila from a beautiful sherry cask. Summing up: warmly recommended and easy to find.

A great malt. The Islay character comes through brilliantly and the over 60% is not really noticeable in the mouth or nose. But the taste and finish is what makes this malt so good. Here you have a great balance of a little cask and a lot of maritime-smoky character with noticeable age and depth. Very good! Worth its RRP of around €250. Great!
