init price in Germany: 1111 Euros Funny how the blue and green shirts are firing high level ratings again while there is no open bottle in any collection here
a whisky that has been lying in the barrel for too long. There is hardly anything left of the smoke and the character of the distillery is overlaid by the dominant oak taste. It's a shame - I expected more complexity.
88 | Sweetness, vanilla, lots of bourbon cask; also oak (bitter substances) and wood |
85 | Oak totally dominates and superimposes everything else; woody, bitter substances, dry and tart; intense in taste, but little or no complex |
84 | long finish, bitter, woody |
Tasted on 2021/11/24 at the Ian Hunter Dinner in Frankfurt/Main

| Нос | 92 | smoky and herbal with tobacco, eucalyptus, mint, hay and a hint of jasmine flowers. Accompanied by autumn leaves and dried flowers as well as sweet vanilla, maple syrup, toffee, rock candy, honey and black pepper |
93 | sweet with peat-smoke and honey-glazed smoked ham; accompanied by fruity-fresh notes of lemon and lychee as well as a hint of iodine and cedar, earthy-floral aromas, sweets and toffee |
91 | lingering oak smoke, ash as well as floral notes |
A very good Laphroaig, with the typical fruity layer that seems to occur after some 25 years.
| Нос | 94 | the signature Laphroaig peat is certainly there, but it’s rounded by age. Seawater, elegant charcoal ashes, hints of lemon candy and bright peaches. Maybe some pineapple. Sweet almonds and whiffs of vanilla pastry. Menthol and embrocations, evolving to floral honey. A little polished wood, old leather and sheepwool as well. Quite excellent. |
| Вкус | 90 | somehow there’s a rather weak onset, staying silent for a while. After that it shows lots of beautiful fruity notes. Mango, pineapple and creamy papaya. However these are held back a little by a wave of oak, which also brings along peppery notes and ginger. It struggles to show its feathers. Subtle iodine and wax towards the end. |
94 | good length, but slightly drying, with mint, cold ashes, hints of white pepper and tobacco leaves. |
4*91
Tasted at whisky show 2021, creamy, not too medicinal, nice balance, very nice
| Нос | 92 | Light citrus fruits, phenols and smoke, maritime notes, wood - very elegant and balanced with a retro character. Over time, there will be more smoke, pepper, hazelnuts, seaweed and peach. The malt is becoming more and more delicate. Finally there are hints of old leather, books, jam and charcoal. Complex, balanced, dignified. I also note some parallels to the Ardbeg Lord of the Isles from the same vintage, with the Ardbeg being smokier in comparison. |
92 | Pepper, ginger, dry wood, wax, citrus fruits, smoke and charcoal, salty caramel, sea air. |
91 | Clear and comparatively intense smoke, again light citrus fruits and oak, various spices - wonderfully complex and very long. |
Nose: Glowing ash, moist gauze bandage on charcoal. After standing in the glass, the smoke evaporates except for a hint. The smoke gives way to various fruits: pineapple, lychee, passion fruit, pithaya. Vanilla and tonka bean. Wood notes are also noticeable, wood glaze. A sea breeze on the beach. A very complex nose that develops over time and has a lot to discover. Mouth: Creamy mouthfeel, vanilla and mango, but also a lot of oak. From memory it is more oak-heavy than Book 1 and less fruity. A slightly salty note joins the ash, like charred flambé salmon. Finish: Oak, vanilla and some fruit. The spicy and dry notes almost wrestle with the vanilla and sweet notes with a little bit of fruit. 91/100 Conclusion: For my taste, book 3 cannot keep up with the beautiful fruitiness of book 1. The oak is a bit too tart for me, the finish too dry. It's a beautiful whisky, but it also has its weaknesses, especially when compared to Book 1
Enjoy this tamed peat. This one definitely aged well. Very well balanced. A bit funny that it reminds me of pan-fried potatoes in sunflower oil in the nose, and for me this would be the best characteristic

| Нос | 94 | The first nose is amazing and intense. Obviously peaty, but then you find much much more, and after a bit, the peat is barely noticeable. Gentle sweetness, wet cloth, medicinal, metallic, burnt leather, a bit smoked meat, haystack, field flowers. Oily and thick |
93 | Oily, dense, ashy, smoky, salty, iodine, haystack, metallic. A bit of black pepper |
93 | Amazing. Long, warming, smoky, ashy. Sweet after a bit |
Fantastic 3

Hmm, to be honest, "disappointed" me a bit, as the expectations after the outstanding book 1 and excellent book 2 were already extremely high. At first it is quite closed and peppery in the mouth, with water it becomes more mineral, fruity and sweeter. Super balanced, but somehow something is missing. Possibly also due to the price-performance ratio ... From a 2cl sample
Typical Laphroaig and one of the best I've ever tasted ...
Original text from the Laphroaig homepage: INTRODUCING THE THIRD CHAPTER OF THE IAN HUNTER STORY A COLLECTIBLE SERIES OF LAPHROAIG® AGED WHISKIES Introducing the third release in our Ian Hunter series: a 33-year-old non-chill altered whisky with creamy liquorice notes, fully matured in ex-Bourbon barrels so that Laphroaig‘s characteristic peatiness shines through. The third release of the Ian Hunter Series is to celebrate the legacy of the last of the Johnston family to own and manage the Laphroaig® distillery, and his fight to protect the Kilbride Stream. This is a story of uncompromising guardianship and a battle between neighbours, over every distillery’s essential lifeblood, its source of water.

Ah, these old Laphroaigs are always so much fun. Lately, after tasting such a delicious old thing, I've been thinking more and more often: it's better to leave one or two of the young ones at the dealer's and invest the money saved in an older large sample instead.
| Нос | 92 | A very creamy nose: freshly whipped cream, clouded by a hint of peat smoke. Fresh peach, apple and banana puree. Hardly maritime and only very slightly phenolic, just reminiscences of the typical Laphroaig aromas. It hits the nose so gently, but at the same time full of volume. Good enough to sink your teeth into. |
| Вкус | 93 | Sweet, soft and just as creamy as suggested on the nose. Here with a little more peat smoke than on the nose. Pieces of peach and mirabelle plums, hazelnut brittle, milky coffee, vanilla, sweet rapeseed honey, with occasional peppery spice. |
| Финиш | 92 | Slightly dry but still creamy. Vanilla pod, honey, smoked peach pieces, now noticeably smokier and more phenolic, even a little seaweed emerges and the smell of used bandages rises to the nose. |

A cerebral dram that rewards patience, bridging Islay's ferocity with Speyside's elegance through masterful cask alchemy. 93/100
It has a relatively oily viscosity and its bouquet is of relatively strong intensity. I have aromas of maritime peat smoke, citrus fruit, spicy oak, caramel, vanilla, honey sweetness and pipe tobacco. Deep and complex. A good balance between sweetness and dryness in terms of taste. The alcohol is well integrated and it has a heavy body.
Laphroaig 33 year old The Ian Hunter Story Book 3: Source Protector, 49.9%. 30ml sample consumed at home in June 2023. Orange gold. Aroma: Soft smoke, light plastic, grilled pineapple, lemon slice sweets, a little buttery, sandy. Nice aroma, if a little muted. Fruitier than I expect Laphroaig to be, although not a fruit bomb by any means. Would never pick this out as a Laphroaig blind. Body is lightly oily. Taste is charcoal and burnt wood. Not much else up front. It’s quite ‘dry’ with no cask sweetness. Really makes me think of charred scrapings from a pan. Very ‘dry’ and burnt. Hints at salt and pepper. No Laphroaig medicinal notes. Blind I might be thinking an oldish Talisker or peated Highland. There’s no real chance I’d have said Laphroaig despite the twangy clove note that eventually starts coming in on the finish. This is decent enough stuff. There's not that much much complexity on show and the flavours that are there lean a bit too much towards the acrid burnt side for me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure I’d be able to get through a bottle if someone is willing to stump up the £1600 to gift it to me. 3.5/84
Sweet and smoky. Honey, ash, citrus fruits, nuts, thin bandages with iodine, a bouquet of spices, mineral and slightly earthy, oak, ash. Long, enveloping aftertaste. 23-23-23-23

A well‑aged bourbon‑cask that delivers on expectations. Despite 33 years, the peat shows surprisingly strong at first but fades quickly with time in the glass; once it lifts, the fruit and florals shine. It has the kind of nose‑palate‑finish cohesion, amplitude, and concentration you expect from an official bottling.
91 | A medicinal edge and gentle smoke; vanilla and apple; light florals; pineapple; herbal notes; cereal/grain and a touch of orange zest. |
91 | Cereal sweetness leads; apple‑mint coolness and gentle florals; a thread of smoke; orange and apple, with some pineapple. |
90 | A starchy, root‑vegetable note and peat, followed by apple and pineapple, with a herbal lift. |
The Nose is Absolute GOAT It is a heartbreaking shame that the volume on the palate feels just a bit dialed down, almost as if a few drops of water had thinned the delivery. Nevertheless, given its overall aromatic journey and exceptional structure, it remains an undeniably legendary and magnificent dram.

| Нос | 92 | Cucurbits (Melon/Gourd), vanilla, medicinal, chamomile, peach, fig, apricot, orange, yuzu marmalade "The Essence of Laphroaig" Every single note presents itself with breathtaking clarity and beauty, without any individual element becoming overly aggressive. A gentle, soft smokiness refined by long years of maturation unfolds alongside a calm, medicinal peatiness, followed closely by the refreshing, cooling aura of cucurbits and the rich sweetness of warm vanilla. Soon after, a clean, elegant floral bouquet reminiscent of chamomile and elderflower gracefully wraps around the senses. Then, a bursting, luscious juiciness of fresh peach floods the nose, accompanied by sweet fig and soft apricot. This gorgeous fruitiness seamlessly interweaves with the velvety, bright citrus of orange and zesty yuzu marmalade, adding a brilliant dimension of luxurious complexity. |
| Вкус | 90 | Phenolic, peach, apricot, plum, apple, honey, leather, raw wood "A Slight Departure from the Magnificent Nose" Compared to the exceptionally structured, heavy volume found on the nose, the actual impact on the palate arrives with a subtle note of longing. The flavor delivery feels slightly thin and muted. A comforting, warming wave of phenolic peat leads the entry, through which a brilliant burst of fresh juice emerges, tasting as if one has taken a generous bite out of a ripe peach or a sweet apricot. A touch of tart plum skin sweeps across the tongue, paired with a dense sweetness that evokes the honey-soaked core of a crisp green apple. The unmistakable presence of antique leather and weathered raw wood provides a solid stamp of historical maturation, which serves as a highly charming asset to the palate. |
| Финиш | 91 | Smoky, plum, peach, apple, dried apple chips, raw wood "A Deeply Enduring Aftertaste" A magnificent conclusion that beautifully executes the textbook definition of a great finish. A delicate, soft smoke generously coats the entire mouth, within which the rich juices of ripe plum and sweet peach remain wonderfully distinct. As time fades, the lingering fruitiness transforms gracefully into the bright signature of fresh apple and the concentrated warmth of dried apple chips, while the comforting, rustic notes of antique raw wood sustain the long, elegant echo until the very end. |
Highlight of the evening at the Laphroaig Tasting. Extremely complex, barrel has taken over.
A taste at a festival, on the run, after a lot, and a small dose, there is a feeling that you need to drink a hundred to give a fair assessment, although this often happens with any whisky

93 | Delightful notes of tropical fruits, pineapple, mango, peach. Subtle smoke. As if apricots were smoked on the wood. |
| Вкус | 90 | Sweet, a little ashy (at the moment it seemed watery to me), the fruit is no longer so bright, but palpable, the smoke has acquired a taste. And yet, rolling it in your mouth, you can again feel this fruity sweetness. |
89 | Sweet, ashy, constricting and astringent receptors, medium duration. |
I really liked books 1 and 4. How is the bourbon barrel made? Honestly, for me it's the weakest Ian Hunter bottling so far. 86-90 – Wow, really good one, needs a bottle

| Нос | 87 | From a bourbon cask bottling with great age, I expect a round fruitiness, at best tropical. I have a fruitiness here, but it's far from tropical. Pretty good, but I'm missing something extraordinary. Now the bottle has been open for a few days and it seems to have developed a bit. That was good. Fruitier. More stimulating. |
90 | Pleasant in the mouth, AVB fits well. However, no aroma particularly comes to the fore. After a few days it becomes fruitier and slightly creamy. |
87 | Earthy, peat comes through a bit. Medium length. |

| Вкус | 91 | The aroma is rich and slightly salty, with no hint of alcohol, reminiscent of ginger ale, yellow fruit, and a touch of lemon. The peatiness, more pronounced than the aroma itself, spreads in the mouth, and the overall sweetness of the fermented dough is just right. |

| Нос | 89 | Deep, elegant, and maritime – like a gentle veil of smoke over wet rocks. Ripe citrus fruits, honey, and polished oak rise up, accompanied by a warm, old cask note reminiscent of a warehouse that has lain dormant for decades. |
| Вкус | 91 | Silky, complex, and powerful – like a wave of sweet peat, honey, and ripe fruit rolling over warm driftwood. Salt, vanilla, citrus, and a hint of herbal spice intertwine to create a deep, luminous composition. |
89 | Long, warm, and elegantly smoky. Peat, oak, and sweet citrus notes linger like the last sparks of an old beach bonfire. |
Retail price in germany: ~1000€ (FoL) Sadly, those books are getting more expensive each year. This one in the series is a lot like Book 1 from 2 years ago. Outstanding nose, easily in the highest region. The palate and finish are quite oak heavy, here there are noticibale differences to the book 1 release. Overall I still liked book 2 most of all releases so far.

Very nice, bright golden color. N: fruity, sweet, smoked pineapple, light smoke, no alcohol to be felt, tropical fruits, fresh wood in the forest, but also a very soft, light note, almost creamy, a lot happens, really great nose! G: Smoke and peat, here it shows strength, typical Laphroaig aromas, somewhat dry, but warming and mouth-filling, powerful, light woodiness. A: soft smoke note, woody, white pepper, a bit bitter, but cozy fireplace smoke stays in the mouth. Overall great drop, but the nose is the best, simply outstanding!
I'm a little disappointed, especially given the high price. A very good drop, but the extreme oak load clouds the overall impression.
