My last Miyagikyo was over 10 years ago. So I'm very excited. All that really stuck in my head was a perfume-like, slightly artificial apple note. Let's see. Very fruity on the nose. Bright fruit. Slightly citrusy. Acid definitely comes through. But also a sweet sherry fruit, in my opinion. Harmonious. No missing grade. Alcohol noticeable, but not stinging. Has something like freshly cut green apples. But at the same time also something of fruit dwarfs with banana flavor. Maybe even a hint of smokiness? Hard to say. Very nice nose. In the mouth it becomes significantly spicier and develops a herbal taste. Grassy. Youthfully bitter. Unfortunately, this has to be said clearly. Now I find it a bit out of round. There is definitely a hint of smoke here. That grassy aroma clings to my palate. Doesn't fit the nose at all. Difficult. Remains very present even in the finish. Purely from the nose, I would have rated this significantly higher. But unfortunately I don't like it that much on the tongue or in the finish.

Opened in 1969 and formerly known as Sendai distillery, Miyagikyo produces the bulk of Nikka's malt and grain whisky. The nose of this NAS expression is fruity, floral and not overtly young, emphasizing banana, mango and a touch of coconut. Beeswax, raisins and lemon hide in the back. On the palate, rich, sweet and surprisingly spicy flavors predominate, ranging from ginger, cinnamon and apples to mocha, licorice and restrained oak. Peppery, zesty and slightly herbaceous, the medium finish subsides with a hint of peat. A very pleasant summer dram. RATING: 3.5/5.0 stars ≙ 84 pts → ABOVE AVERAGE

Always grateful when Slàinte Mhath brings or leaves a bottle of Nippon juice as it is highly unlikely I would pick it up myself. This was a quite respectable one.

From the nose, the Miyagikyo is a summery exotic fruit bomb. Very pleasant and a nice combination between the fruity and the tart-spicy aromas. In terms of taste and finish, it is surprisingly less fruity than expected, with the spicy components dominating here. The malt is not a complexity monster. But it is very drinkable and balanced - despite its youthfulness. Like the Yamazaki Distillers Edition, this is a very pleasant summer whisky that will certainly cut a fine figure in highball.

Fresh, mild, malty, spicy and sweet. Creamy nutty mouthfeel, barley sugar, florals, apricots , honey, vanilla and caramels. Soft pepper spice finish. Quite expensive for what it is. Tastes like a good Speyside malted blend, except twice the price.The harmony and Yoichi are more interesting.

This was a sample courtesy of Peatbogger. I am not an expert in Japanese whisky and I have tasted some howlers recently and that's because they have been cheap presents of friends and family. This however is a vast improvement.

Some tobacco leaf after a while as well. I was prepared for a young whisky, given the lack of age statement, and sure enough, you can sense the youth, but this is still pretty impressive for a Japanese single malt at a rather affordable price level. [edit: Once the filling level of the bottle has gone down to the last third or so, I started wonderingif there might be a touch of sulphur in here, after all. Let's subtract a point...] |

A complex interplay of aromas opens with sweet vanilla and the luscious ripeness of bananas. Spicy ginger lends the composition a lively freshness, while malt notes and delicate oak provide depth. A hint of butter biscuit rounds out the nose, accompanied by a light citrus scent that creates a pleasant lightness. The first impression is creamy and velvety. Grainy notes form the base, upon which spicy ginger and the tangy freshness of lime unfold. Vanilla remains present and blends harmoniously with fine milk chocolate – a balanced interplay of sweetness, spice, and fruitiness. Medium-length with an elegant finish. Vanilla remains noticeable and is accompanied by tart grapefruit. Oak and fine spice notes ensure a structured and pleasantly dry finish. A thoroughly pleasant Japanese whisky. Soft and smooth, as one would expect from Japanese whiskies, but also with a certain depth and spice. The alcohol content is just right and adds a bit of verve.

It is a light, very fragrant Japanese Lowland whisky, effortlessly pleasant, undemanding, intended for a wide audience of rather new whisky lovers.
