100% Islay barley; 1st fill oloroso… at least 11 yo. well, something isn’t right here… he is sharp and lacks complexity on the palate & the nose… indeed it doesn’t blow off any socks at all!

Wow, as a long-time Kilchoman fan, this is practically the end of the world. First the 15th Edition of the 100% Islay, now this 11-year-old Sherry Cask Matured – neither of them at all what I expected or hoped for. There was so much potential there in its younger years. Where has it all gone if a 9-year-old ex-bourbon and an 11-year-old Oloroso Cask perform so comparatively poorly?

Нос	85	Blackberries, blueberries, raisins and dried figs, cherries, a touch of barrel mustiness with a slight tendency towards a sulfur note - strawberry chocolate, cocoa, espresso beans, a hint of smoke.
Вкус	84	For 50% ABV, this is an exceptionally mild start – considering the rather meager aroma profile, one could even describe it as watery, which I find quite alarming, especially in the context of an 11-year-old Kilchoman. While some spiced plum jam, cold smoke, and even smoked pineapple slices can be detected, it's not quite as straightforward. It all comes together quite well, no doubt, but compared to all the truly excellent young Kilchoman bottlings of yesteryear, this current Kilchoman classic doesn't fare particularly well.

The Sherry isn't overpowering, rather light and airy, with notes of orange peel, dried fruit, raisins, figs, cherries in brandy, and dates. There are hints of varnished wood, blackberry tart, delicate smoke tinged with soot, melting caramel, Aosta ham, leather, and a whiff of iodine and citrus. On the palate, there are plums, but also coffee, dark chocolate, brown tobacco, some cereal notes, and various spices: nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon. The finish is quite long, but not overpowering, with candied ginger, citrus zest, charcoal, seashells, a pinch of salt, damp wood, and pine needles. well-balanced sherried Kilchoman with not overly dominant peat. Hard to tell Islay barley character here, but the whisky is full-bodied and with nice creamy texture. Recommended? Yes, without any doubt.

Нос	88	less phenols, than expected. First nosing - smoked ham, wool, farm, grilled fruit, prunes, dates. Also light iodine or medicinal aromas, some caramel syrup and sweet-sour berries.
Вкус	87	a drop of syrup, smoked meat, barbecue, burnt jam, buckwheat honey, ripe sour cherry. The second sip reveals some citrus sourness and a bit of ash, chili is present as well.
Финиш	88	long, balanced combination of phenols and sweet-sour fruit and berries. In the development dark chocolate, tobacco, seafood, mineral notes.

One of my all time favorites. Such a classy relaxing dram. So representative of its unique profile. Sweet, thick, rich, a warm summer evening, or a cool winter's night .. you can look at it either way and it will take you there. Beautiful hidden gem of a whisky.

Нос	85	Blackberries, apples, with a bonfire the next field over from the orchard. A note of salinity. Honeyed oats.
Вкус	84	Fruity at first, red apples, A wee hint of aniseed. Dark chocolate. Then a sweet/savoury note arrives, honey roast ham.
Финиш	86	Medium to long. Oaky, coastal note returns. A bit of liquorice, then end with an ashy fire.

A delicious Islay whisky, where everything comes into its own. One of the beast Kilchoman I have tried to date, and this bodes very well for future older bottlelings. Highly recommended.

Нос	87	Plenty of peat, but not as strong as you would expect. The peat is complemented by scents of forest fruits (blackberries, redcurrants, and blueberries), milk chocolate, and dark cocoa. You can also smell a hint of coffee beans, honey, and new leather.
Вкус	88	Reasonably soft, but exactly what you want. You taste peat smoke, smoked meat, plums, and a nice amount of raisins. This is complemented by honey, grilled pineapple, and the taste of a (good) cigar. For 50.0%, the whisky drinks very well.
Финиш	88	Medium to long, where essentially all the flavors return. You have peat smoke, coffee beans, dark chocolate, and salted caramel at the center. This is complemented by plums, smoked meat, and honey. Far in the background, the grilled pineapple provides an extra layer.

11 years of full maturation in Oloroso casks, 50% ABV, and 100% from Kilchoman Farm? That sounds like my wishes for a Loch Gorm upgrade have finally been granted! My expectations were correspondingly high... and unfortunately, they weren't met. It essentially offers no more than a standard Loch Gorm; the only difference is that it doesn't feel quite as watery in the mouth. This is not a bad single malt, but considering the price, I'm glad I only got a sample.

A vatting from 16 Oloroso sherry casks – that should have been enough for well over 10,000 bottles, which, at prices above €90, probably won't sell so quickly. There's likely still room for price reductions... Apart from that: A delicious, honest 100% Islay with beautiful fruit notes and a lovely color from the sherry casks, with still noticeable, after 11 years almost elegant peat smoke.

The 100 % islay is of course dominated by the sherry wood, and quite a contrast with those much younger early editions of this classic from Kilchoman. Kilchoman is the only distillery not directly on the water; it's the only farm distillery. Not all the malt is from their own grain; some is purchased. Previously, the purchased malt came from Port Ellen Maltings, but now it comes from the mainland, though it's kilned with their own Islay peat and Scottish barley. However, this 10% Islay bottling is indeed 100% Islay. An 11-year-old Kilchoman from the 100% Islay series. This bottling uses barley harvested on the distillery's own Islay estate. Specifically, Publican Barley from the 2011, 2012, and 2013 harvests was used. The barley is malted at the distillery and kilned with peat from the island. The phenol content is generally lower than that of purchased malt. Kilchoman plans to build additional malting floors to produce more of its own malt. The whisky matured in 16 ex-Oloroso sherry butts, which imparted a beautiful dark golden color. glen-efze.de

A heavy, dirty, and dry ex-oloroso Sherry Kilchoman. Ashy/minerally smoke, peat, bacon, leather, dry sour red fruits, oak, dark chocolate, honey, caramel, mix of spices, gentle lemon note. Objectively speaking, it is a well-done whisky, just is not quite to my style. I can imagine that some "peathead" loving dirty sherry whiskies would score this one an 88/89.

Нос	86	OK, easily recognizable as sherried Kilchoman. I see similarities to Loch Gorm, I had few years back.
Вкус	87	Medium to high complexity. Quite oily and spicy. The sherry used is rather a dry one than a sweet and fruity one.
