A nice quality entry level blend that is a bit engineered, the batches are also inconsistent and there is a lot of variation. Most are bourbon barrel driven with sweet tropical influences, but others have more sherry casks blended in and a bitter acidic note, and some are slightly peated from a higher Ben Nevis content in the mix. 83/100
Nikka from the Barrel comprises 40% malt whisky and 60% grain whisky (from the Coffey stills at Miyagikyo). It also contains a small amount of Ben Nevis, approximately 4% (quoted from an interview with TWE). Overall, the influence of the grain content is intuitive, but even considering that it has a surprising value for the price and can be enjoyed neat as well.

Very good whiskey for the price.
Reminiscent of bourbon. What the nose promises, can not be fully implemented in terms of taste. Very impetuous and untamed with a clear dominance of alcohol.

Nose:- Packed with spices, clove and virgin oak, solid plum aroma linger with beautiful floral note. Very soothing on nose despite high strength. Not aggressive, just pure finesse. Dried fruit note with water. Palate:- Sweet milk, creamy with intense honey emerge gradually. The liquid dissolve evenly on palate. Smooth and round. Finish:- Long with ginger pungent at the back. Feeling the strength building up at this stage with a deep minty aftertaste. Restraint spiciness. — at The Whisky Bar, Kuala Lumpur.

Not very impressive specimen, simple enough and uncomplicated, bourbon-like, a barrel fortress here a little rectifies the situation adding depth and saturation.

Nikka from the barrel *Age statement: NAS. *Alcohol percentage at least 46%: yes, 51.4%. *Amount of filtration: unstated. *Use of caramel coloring {E150a}: German bottles state that there is Farbstoff in this. (1 out of 4, regarding craft/integrity presentation and communication). Without water Nose/olfaction: It reeks like a dusty room, a bit of sherry and peat look around the corner. Palate/gustation: It tastes loud, lots of sweetness, and there are notes of marshmallows and hot chocolate. Finish/coda: what remains on the tongue is chocolate chips and raspberry jam. With water Nose/olfaction: less dusty, like the room has been cleaned a bit in French fashion, and some nutmeg appears. Palate/gustation: much the same, but some citrusy sourness becomes more pronounced. Finish/coda: some charcoal notes get more accentuated. Nikka from the barrel is a batchy dram, which of course isn’t a bad thing if the quality remains consistent, but it was quite a surprise how much my last bottle differed from my current one. For example I distinctly remember tasting a wood note that I would categorize as Mizunara, but that is completely absent here, instead I get much more peaty and sherry vibes, which weren’t there the last time. Meanwhile a German site claims that this is mostly matured in ex-bourbon barrels, which means that there are lots of permutations going around of this stuff. On a more dour note though, this one I have in front of me would be difficult to call Japanese, it seems to have lots of Ben Nevis in it. Nonetheless is this a joy for everyone, from the plebians who crave Japanese whisky because of its clout to the dram-a-hollics who are looking for their next affordable hit.
Excellent volume resulting from the high alcohol content. It's really good value for money.

Wood, cinnamon leaves, slightly bitter caramel, a hint of bocage peat, the cocoa we sprinkle on cakes. Very pleasant, balanced, grainy, bewitching smoke. On the palate, a zest of citrus fruits, probably blood orange, green tea, cereals and chocolate. It's slightly peppery and spicy, with cola and charcoal on the finish, it fizzes a little on the throat. It doesn't feel like 51°, but it's still solid, and it's not too young. Chicory in retro-olfaction. A little gem, offered at a very modest price despite its high alcohol content and complexity. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2020/05/nikka-from-barrel-514-original-bottling.html

sweet and rich in taste
Because of the fresh notes in the nose and the bitter notes in the taste, it is a great summer drink for me. Unfortunately, I occasionally have slightly alcoholic notes in my taste. On the other hand, it probably needs the 51.4% to create a certain expressiveness. You can do that, but you don't have to. Date of purchase: 03.11.2022

Intense in taste adequate to the ABV, but spicy, highly alcoholic, also with a lot of bitterness. Similar to Nikka Days, no interesting flavor notes, "whisky with a whiskey flavor".
Nikka from the Barrel is another proof of what Japan's forte. Enhancing a very good product to near perfection. Nikka delivers an excellent price-quality whisky with this blend. I'm putting my money on the honeymoon in oak casks. A 50cl bottle costs somewhere between €35 and €38. A still affordable Japanese whisky. And some serious competition for the budget drams of respected names like Glenfarclas and Aberlour.
Made in the Yoichi distillery, the second and smaller plant of the Nikka Whiskey Company. Founded in 1934 by one of the two most influential men in the history of Japanese whiskey (Masataka Taketsuru). Yoichi distillery is like the territory of a Scottish distillery. Yoichi has her own barrel binding and is especially attentive when it comes to the selection of barrels. The barrels are called Hogshead and produced on the spot.

An absolutely successful Japanese whiskey for a brilliant price! Complex, intense and fruity and definitely recognizable as a Japanese. This perfume-like composition with a clean separation between fruit, wood and spice is significant. With water it becomes even more accessible, but without losing complexity. My first Japanese wine, I searched in vain for a correspondingly unique profile, for me it could also be a bourbon maturation from the Highlands or Speyside. Simple but good, fruity and sweet with enough strength thanks to over 50%, definitely recommendable at the current price of around €30...

This little bottle is well worth it’s money! A lovely engaging whisky that can keep you occupied for quite some time. A little drop of water enhances the sweetness and oak in this dram. Next to that it is an affordable Japanese whisky that has a good price to quality ratio. I can highly recommend it. http://www.worldwhisky.nl/review-328-nikka-from-the-barrel/
An original, rich and powerful whiskey that surprises with its aromatic complexity. It is well balanced even if sometimes the alcoholic notes come to tarnish the picture. Available for a small forty euros, you would be wrong to deprive you!
-3 points because of price (EUR 54 in my country), but at EUR 30, this is good
For a cheap whiskey and first of Nikka, amazing drinkable. I will not buy it anyway, highest for guests who understand "really much" of whiskey, hehehe. in German: You dise nise fil kole mus abdrukke. have mer kole then for women and for spoilers for rust heaps in front of the door is Disel, you know! is a blatant man.
If Nikka would only lengthen the neck of the bottle a little bit, I'd not have spilled so much of this whisky!

This is a scotch whisky blended with some japanese replica of scotch whisky. Anyway, what’s it made of : Mysterious origins, a lying ingredients list, and a serious price tag.
First, this is a whisky comes from Japan but not a “Japanese whisky” by definition. The Japanese writing on the label doesn’t automatically make it one. Let’s stay informed and not be deceived while we sip. Good shaped bottle? Absolutely. Wish it had a cork? Definitely. Not cask strength, but bottled at 51.4%, which is gooood! Unfortunately, it’s color-added and chill-filtered. Nose: Vanilla powder, like smelling a sweet plain cake. Palate: A green apple coming at first, followed by a small sherry note. You feel the 51.4% more on the nose than on the palate. Finish: Slightly sour with a short finish, due to the chill filtration probably. Score: 83/100

What a pleasant surprise indeed. A great Japanese whisky!
A blend well done, a little too typical caramel, but can be a good approach to whiskey because it is attractive the guy. However, it does not seem expensive but ultimately not so cheap as that!
Looks a bit like a Bourbon.
Oh, it smells very fruity, oak very intense, remarkably mild, despite the high alcohol content. Only when you put your nose completely in the glass, it becomes intense. My first sip is madness. Only very mild, fruity, then - delayed - the turbo starts. In between, a smoky note. Now there's vanilla added, all very complex, really great. I add a drop of water, it will not change much, it retains this fresh fruitiness. My tongue is burning, but very pleasant ... A very nice whiskey for anyone who is looking for something different. And typical Japanese, the tasteful bottle and packaging.
basic yes one of the precursors Japanese whiskeys yes! not bad yes! simple, not so much, that I have the memory of having several scents in the nose, depending on when I tasted it! first shoot, digestive, or to open the palace to peat! in any case, a good blended

Frankly, I always look at the Japanese with a suspicious eye, given the hype of the moment. There are few Japanese whiskies I consider a true bargain in these days, but Nikka From the Barrel is one of them. Minimalist packaging, solid 51.4% ABV and the aromatic, gingery aroma with cayenne pepper, lemongrass and hints of orange peel leave a good first impression. On the palate, you get an interesting combination of Yoichi and Miyagikyo flavors: initial spiciness is followed by fruity-sweet notes until a zesty-dry bitterness emerges. The medium finish fades with restrained oak, green tea and a touch of fresh mint. Grab a bottle while you still can! RATING: 3.7/5.0 stars ≙ 85 pts → ABOVE AVERAGE [+]

Nikka Whisky from the Barrel (old bottling), consumed at a wedding in August 2018. Lovely rounded bourbon-brandy vibes throughout. Intense with nice toffee and malt flavours. Rich and deep. Good stuff. 3.5/84 Nikka Whisky from the Barrel (new bottling) (51.4%). Bottle - sleek all black packaging - from Waitrose for £30, bought on the back of trying an older bottling, and consumed Nov 2018. Intense toffee-bourbon-honeycomb aroma. Taste is super-firey, lots of palate-cleansing booze alongside toffee and caramel. It's basically like an upmarket bourbon. Some poached apples and pears. I am detecting more burnt/char flavours comparative to the older bottling. A touch young and harsh maybe. Water really helped it. Maybe bottlings are a little variable. Not my favourite but you could pay a lot more for a similar bourbon. 3.3/79

It's a grainy and initially very spirit-heavy blend of what I've read to be more than 100 different whiskies. It's not actually cask strength, but the overwhelming grain elements make it hard to drink neat. With a bit of water and plenty of air, it does indeed develop into an interesting blend with some pleasantly sherried influence. There's a lot going on here, but it's all a mile wide and an inch deep. Nothing really stands out or makes me want to take another sip or buy a whole bottle.

Bit sharp, gluey and bitter, but with some water It really opens up. Lot of orange peel, woody, bit of subdued glue (typical with Japanese whisky) with a spicy peppery bitter dry finish. Bottle looks cool, but poors very poorly when still full. Bit expensive for the quality.
I can’t say too much about this. It’s enjoyable, for sure. Somewhat forgettable too. I would say, it’s a very good dram without too much of a character. The (only) local pub next to my office only sells this, Talisker 10 and Glenfiddich 12, so when wanting some variation I regularly have this one. It serves its purpose well, it’s decent dram to have in a setting like that. I don’t need a bottle at home though.

It feels quite good for the price. It's great for highballs and also drinkable as a nitro.

What a nice surprise this Blend is!Very round and rich flavored for that price!
aromatic, light, perfumed nose with caramel, vanilla and oak, fruit at most in echoes (pear?), behind malt, grain or hay, the alcohol is perfectly integrated, very soft and clean distilled, here stings and burns nothing, after some time Coffee and a hint of smoke, in the mouth very sweet with strong, but pleasant oak spiciness, dark caramel and licorice, dark, many "roasted aromas", reminiscent of bourbon
A perfect daily dram as for only 30€ for 0,5l you cannot make anything wrong. Nevertheless you realize that the whisky is quite young with several smaller problems where some years of maturation would have helped.
My notes from 7-3-2014
This is an incredibly nice dram! Very pleasant on the nose, so rounded I prefer to have it straight. So much going on both in taste and smell, but it's all in ballance to one another. The bottle is really too small, coz you won't just have one glass. In the whisky world this IS value for money.
Great and for 32 € / 0.7 a buy recommendation. Strong and intense in the taste, neat spicy, possible youth does not have a negative effect, everything fits.

Really good. Multi-layered and intense. What more do you want.
Like a Guglhupf with a dash of rum ...

Sweet and tart Japanese, alcohol well integrated, pleasant and soft despite higher percentages, not too complicated, top for the price

| Нос | 85 | Vanilla, glucose, slightly floral, some leather, lemon, grapefruit |
| Вкус | 84 | Soft, creamy, vanilla, caramel, candy |

Medium-body with good balance. There are notes of cut flowers and fresh fruits, spice and a little oak.
Much predictably, my first Japanese whisky, and not disappointing at all. Yes, it's actually something quite different, yet very enjoyable. Despite its alcohol abv, the result is soft and balanced, even sweet with a distinctive crispy taste. Not very complex, but surprisingly easy to drink, as its plain, silky mouthfeel each time leaves you yearning for more.

An intense and sufficiently interesting whiskey considering its price, perhaps not a bit too much ABV for its rather subtle character in terms of aroma.
(Blind tasting) Light amber color. Oily structure. It did surprisingly well in the blind tasting :)

| Нос | 87 | Orchard fruit. Red apples. Dried apples. A hint of ash. A touch of minerality. Caramel, toffee, honey. Yellow apples, a little rotten. Opens up more with time. Tropical fruit. Peaches. Apricots. Oranges. |
| Вкус | 88 | Caramel. Honey. There's a bit of dirt. A slight metallicity. A minimal trace of ash. A heavily burnt barrel. A touch of charcoal. Spices. White pepper. Dark chocolate. Espresso. There's a bit of earthiness. Even something like a bit of peat, but in the Highland version. A slight oiliness. |
| Финиш | 87 | Quite a bit of ash. Light dirt. Metallic. Spices. Black pepper, white pepper. A touch of ginger. Cocoa. Dark chocolate. Fairly long finish. |
The start of the journey into Japanese whiskies ... There is a certain simplicity which is intensely impressive. Quality for price!

Nose: Bourbon barrels were mainly used. Also smells almost like a bourbon. Burnt corn, cardboard, sweet caramel, nougat and an alcoholic note. Taste: Also on the tongue very "bourbonny", but in the sense of "bonny bourbon". In addition to the well-known chocolate notes and maple syrup, smoke is added and the alcohol content is clearly noticeable. In the consistency heavy and oily. Finish: Somewhat rough, burns a bit. Comment: You could almost mistake it for a good bourbon, just without the glue notes. The nose is the best part. Overall, a very robust, rich and entertaining whiskey with an excellent PLV ... and the bottle (little thick Nikka) is also very cuddly. 87 p
Oaky, nutty nose, with lashings of fresh, sweet vanilla. A drop of water brought forth more fruity (particularly ripe apple) and spicy notes, as well as a faint whiff of something smoky. Like a scotch/bourbon hybrid (actually this reminds me lot of the North British 17yo grain I've recently opened [Signatory bottling]). Slightly more mono dimensional on the palate, with sweet vanilla and woody oak the predominant tastes. Medium-length, sweet finish. Very nice dram that has its own distinct style. Excellent value for money, especially at such a high strength!
40% malt, 60% grain (including corn), about 10-12 years for the first batches, bourbon casks and sherry.

You definitely have to give him 2.3 starts, the first 1.2 tries he will be a much too sharp and alcoholic, but he wins more each time and then you begin to decode its quality at the ridiculous price!
Color: dark gold. Body: dense, oily. Nose: Slightly pinched, not very intense, but gradually opening up with many colors. Slightly alcoholic (cask strength makes itself felt). Bourbon aging is recognized due to the tangible proportion of acetone, lacquer, oil nuances in the aroma. Honey notes, orange peel, lemongrass, many nutty hints of hazelnuts and spicy hints of fresh hot peppers (such as cayenne or chili) and cloves, sweet aromas of dried fruits (dried apricots and prunes), plum and cherry jam and fresh mango, toffee, milk chocolate stand out clearly , marzipan and hints of coffee, animal leather and peaty oak notes. Taste: assertive and burning, intensely tingling in the mouth. Lemon sourness and honey sweetness are rather quickly washed off by a powerful pepper wave with a slight presence of peat and oak nuances. The taste continues its development towards vanilla, peach, dried apricots, red apples, shadberry, coffee and milk chocolate. Finish: medium length, warming but uninteresting, without much development. Dried fruits and vanilla.
Normally a 500ml bottle feels like a bit of a con, but Nikka from the Barrel is both well priced (especially for a Japanese whisky!) and styled with inimitable Japanese minimalism. Yes it is a blend, but to dismiss this as 'just a blend' reeks of elitism. The nose presents milk tea, gentle florals, orchard fruits, ginger and (of course) vanilla. The palate is greeted with a nice fruity arrival, mainly apples and pears, after which an array of spices fill the mouth: vanilla, pickled ginger, cinnamon and clove. The 51.4% does some work here providing a full mouth feel but no alcohol burn. The finish is warming, respectably long with an enjoyable citrus spike. Nikka from the Barrel is enjoyable but besides the packaging I'm not sure I can detect a clear "Japanese-ness" about it. Update 2021: Due to the very welcome changes to Japanese whisky regulations, it is now very understandable why this whisky was so nice. Its secret sauce was Ben Nevis.
Medium-body with good balance. There are notes of cut flowers and fresh fruits, spice and a little oak.
Beautiful whisky with an excellent price-performance ratio.

Apart from peat, it frankly does everything I want in a whisky. There is so much going on while still managing to deliver a coherent narrative of flavours, textures and tones. It's impressive and I find it deeply satisfying. Somehow Nikka From The Barrel has remained delicious, accessible and reasonably priced (where I am) for a decade. In my experience so far, this has never been anything but a pleasure to drink.
Nika Fromder Barrel 4.0 Incense Coffee Ground, Toffee Taste like cinnamon + caramel pickled apples I liked the condensed sweet and fruity flavor, and when I drank the other two halves, I emptied them all first. It was quite fun, and it was easy and delicious to eat.

NOSE: Orchard fruits and sweet barley; green apples, green grapes, oranges, kumquats, orange liqeur, some malt and barley as well. Summer forest honey, buttery oak. Quite pleasant. (88p) TASTE: The arrival is a little oaky and spicy but still rounded and sweet. This continues onto the mid palate. Plus orange liqeur and hints of marzipan. (86p) FINISH: The orange liqeur dies, tannins and some crushed black pepper quickly appears. Relatively short and a bit bitter. (83-84p) OVERALL: A lovely blended whisky. I imagine that I can taste the Ben Nevis component in the green fruits and citrus components. The finish was unimpressive. Total score 86 points.
-Blind tasting- Typing something here is not easy. The furniture polish note and the grainy aroma on the nose made me think of a grain. Despite the intermittent sharpness it exhibits on the tongue, I think it could be around 43%. A blend? (After the resolution: I probably had a few cask strength whiskey too many lately. Rarely was it so wrong with the alcohol strength)

| Нос | 84 | An extremely spicy nose, like a spice cabinet that has just been opened, thyme, tarragon, marjoram and cloves push forward. Underneath, milk chocolate and nougat emerge, a grainy note, furniture polish. |
| Вкус | 84 | Initially mild in attack, it quickly increases, bringing a certain pepper and paprika spiciness to the tongue, only to become a little tamer again shortly afterwards. Milk chocolate, vanilla pudding, much less differentiated spices than on the nose. |
| Финиш | 83 | Medium length, slightly dry, recurring pepper and paprika spice, cereal notes, caramelized popcorn, malt. |
My review about the Nikka from the Barrel: It is a blend of Japanese malt whisky from Yoichi distillery and grain whisky from Miyagikyo distillery. Probably one of them has been matured in a sherry butt and the other in a ex-bourbon cask, after that they are married in a refill hogshead. Price 55 euros (the price is between 40 and 55) Tasted on 31/12/2022 My first conclusion on this whiskys is that it is not a real whisky, because it needs a bit of water to tune down its alcoholic taste. After introduce some drops of water:

| Нос | 78 | I will say that combines an intense smoky with some sweet notes aftertaste. It is spicy too. It is like a foggy day, but behind all that clouds it is hiding a sweet hope. The sweet hope is integrated by oranges, green apples, green grapes and so on. |
| Вкус | 80 | The taste has some different flavours: oak, sherry, more spicy and predominantly sweet. It appear a image to my mind, the fog has lifted and now we can see a garden with the oranges, green apples, green grapes, some trees with oak, sherry and so on. |
| Финиш | 78 | It is a long finish (it has been for a while), in the finish it disappear the sweet part of the whisky (not at all), it is predominatly spicy. In the last part of this story we discover that we can find at the end of the garden a black pepper plantation. |

Nutty, sweet, coffee, leather polish, vanilla, gentle peat. Enjoyable drinkable malt.
N: Red apple, vanilla, split pine, earthy peat morphs into fudge, spirity P: Nose carries over largely, with a dallop of frosting sweetness and some leather, along with a fair amount of mouth-numbing spiciness F: There's a simple-syrup sweetness and barrel spice that carry on, dragon fruit It's good for a blend but isn't crazy complex.
A nice Japanese but the alcohol is poorly integrated.

Amazingly fine whiskey for its price range !! Great Nutty notes. Only the bottle annoying - bottleneck way too short - there is always something wrong (nerve)

Tasted 12.05.2016 Nose: Honey, vanilla, bourbon. Taste: Undiluted: vanilla, wood spice, cinnamon, honey. With a few teaspoons of water: Honey, wood spice, some vanilla.
Bit too much of an alcohol punch for me (I had a bit of a sore throat when tasting this). But without a doubt a bang-for-your-buck whisky. Combines well with dark chocolate. Tasted on 13/11/2016 in a Japanese line-up (WB ID's 70236, 5443, 9252, 38412, 6016, 71248 and 20342, in that order).

Light, fruity-floral whiskey with plum, mandarin and peach. The high alcohol content is well integrated to drink it neat, but with a little water it opens up a bit, becomes more oily and releases additional notes of vanilla. Length: 3/10 Beautiful summer whiskey that tastes good even at high temperatures and does not overwhelm anyone. Grade: 2

| Нос | 83 | Pretty full and volatile. Enjoyable. Lots of fruit. There is also some creaminess, caramel. There is some maltiness and spices. Then some fresh green fruit. |
| Вкус | 83 | Pretty sweet. Feel a little graininess. Lightly malt. A bit of caramel sweetness. A trace of smoke. Spices. White pepper. It's not too harsh for the power. |
| Финиш | 82 | A slight warm-up at the beginning. A trace of smoke. Grain. Malt. Creamy. Caramel and vanilla. A little seasoning at the beginning, white pepper. Medium-length finish. |
Once again great blending art from the land of the setting sun. Rarely have I experienced such an intense blend and not necessarily because of the high alcohol strength. A whiskey like a sumo wrestler with a penchant for caramel sweets.
