Ultimately, a class whisky that does a lot of things right. The smoky notes are not overdone and leave room for other flavors.

| Нос | 86 | There are many maritime smells on the nose, from seaweed to iodine and of course smoke. |
| Вкус | 85 | The taste is significantly milder than expected from Nosing. Maritime aromas are also present here. A feeling of campfire comes up with these aromas. The impression in the mouth is soft and slightly oily. |
| Финиш | 86 | The finish is balanced, somewhat dry and of medium length. At the end there is a slight sweetness with oak aromas. |

Sample from a 2017 batch. Rather good but it can't compete with a 16yr White Horse mini I'm having alongside it - it's lacking the complexity, depth, and harmony found in the much earlier expression.

| Нос | 86 | Smoky and maritime, a bit medicinal. Brine, tarry ropes, black pepper, hints of citric fruits (oranges especially). A bit too much wood and vanilla. A little chocolate and rubber. |
| Вкус | 88 | Actually better than I was expecting, despite the weak arrival. Sweeter and fruitier - orange zest, apples, a touch of pink grapefruit. Pepper, brine, fairly smoky/maritime/medicinal with good balance. Not as much vanilla or wood. |
| Финиш | 87 | Sweet fruitiness, lots of peat. A bit more vanilla now which slightly detracts from the experience as the finish progresses. But still rather good. |
Sea, smoked fish, burnt wood, dried fruit, berries of the forest, light pepperiness, some spices and heather. Complex, drinkable, long finish.
It's not for everyone For a specific audience Strong aroma, smoky taste
Color – amber. Aroma – peat, swamp, mustiness, cocoa, tea. Taste – peat, iodine, smokedness, sausage, sweetness. Pairs with blue cheese. Standard whisky from Islay.

| Нос | 86 | Toffee. Buttery. Caramel. Salt. Salted caramel. Then smoke. Peat. Then dried fruit comes in. Milk chocolate. A touch of seaweed. Salted peanuts. Herbal notes. More salt and peanuts the second time around. |

| Финиш | 87 | Quite full and intense. Dried fruit. Dessert chocolate. Dried plums. Smoked plums. Toffee. Salted caramel. Hazelnuts. Nougat, but in a salty and non-sweet version. A trace of spices. A bit of raisins. Cocoa. Dark chocolate. Long finish. |
Even though it is chill-filtered and probably heavily loaded with caramel, I would pick this over Ardbeg 10 any day... This has more to offer than just the peat. The sherry cask influence is well present even after the heavy filtration... Imagine what it could offer without chill-castration!
This is a classy Islay Malt. Its warmth and coziness remind me of a bonfire during a warm, peaceful summer evening somewhere on the seaside. A time spent with family or friends... Slainte!
One of my all-time favorites, though I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay the price

I like this, but I don’t love it. I can see though why this would be the go-to whisky for peat enthusiasts. Pretty affordable and pretty good.

It's just a Laga 16! For me, the standard Islay representative that you have to know. He has everything to feel like standing on Islay's coast. The soft sherry tones play around the stormy rest and it is fun to seek the sherry influence, even if it is not easy.

Is currently the only known Lagavulin, which is just too ashy for me. I prefer the DE
A fantastic standard, which only gets me 90 points plus, because with 43% it lacks a little of the puncturing power and the knowledge about a completely unnecessary coloring spoils my ecstasy. Away from it a really great standard for a more than fair price.

Batch L8212 Nose: Very nice, like a broadside sweet smoke. The smoke smell could also come from the lapsang souchong of my local tea dealer, as if resinous wood were burning in the distance. But even in Lagavulin 16 I find a medical grade that is very, very similar to the current Caol Ila 12yo. Maybe because of the same malt? But the smoke here is heavier, heavier, carried by sweet vanilla, and a handful of redcurrants. Also a splash of juice fresh orange pressed is there. After some breathing time comes a smell like dates in bacon from the glass and at the latest now begins salivation. Mouth: A smoky-sweet, but also dry onset, vanilla and again parallels to a freshly brewed Lapsang. A little dates and orange, some currants. In short: the aromas of the nose consistently continued in the mouth. Add to that the taste of licorice on which you chew (which often exists on medieval markets, for example). But: The mouthfeel does not do justice to the strong nose. It feels a bit watery, the aromas are not as strong as the nose promises. Unfortunately that makes him seem quite flat. Finish: Here he is bitter, a touch coin money (too many inactive barrels?), Sawdust and remains of pencil tips. A solid whisky and a welcome guest in the local bar. Unfortunately, I do not like this batch so much, and I find the four-year-younger brother from the North Coast more rounded overall and more coherent in the overall picture. 83/100
I will try to leave my assessment of this, if I may say so, to my beloved (maybe starter) from decent ones (along with the test for Cyrillic). For the first time I liked its obvious oiliness, i.e. with dislike (inexperience?) to whisky, Lagavulin as something "went." And about Makallan, I was heard a lot and tried all kinds of 1824 on the Canary Islands because of the local budget. And this (lag) literally poured in and ... increased in price each year by about 10 euros approximately))). Those. I definitely recommend both to the collection and to knowledge.
Truly outstanding!

Category: Single Malt Producer and bottler: Lagavulin Distillery (Diageo) Series: Classic Malts of Scotland Region: Islay Fortress: 43% Volume: 700 ml Bottling date: 07/25/2019 Barrel type: Bourbon & Sherry Casks Exposure: 16 years Filtering: ? Dye: present Aromatics. The surprisingly beautiful, rich, deep and ever-changing nose of this whisky testifies to its venerable age and the fine work of the manufacturer in maintaining the traditionally high quality of the product for a considerable number of years. He seems to have absorbed all the distinctive features of the Ailov neighbors (powerful smoke and peat like Ardbeg, a little medical features of Laphroaig, light minerality of Caol Ila, etc.) and mixed them into a single cool alloy. Here you have sweet pleasant smoke from burning branches of young trees or shrubs, and tobacco motifs, hot smoked fish, leather, shoe polish, withered leaves and humus in the autumn forest after rain, cold infused tea brewing. Let's not forget about sea (sea salt and a little iodine), medical (Vishnevsky's ointment, Asterisk balm) and malt (soaked crumb of white bread, vanilla) notes. It is worth noting that the aroma is also enriched by sweet and fruity traits (milk chocolate, baked pears and apples, prunes, lemon juice and zest). The taste is really striking in its saturation, despite the fact that we have only 43% “on board”. At first, for a couple of seconds, it is sweet, chocolate-vanilla-caramel. Then burnt woods, pepper, zest, sea iodine, oily and minty sensations approach and, soon, they explode, filling the entire space of taste. Every now and then, here and there, fruits and berries suddenly manifest themselves in taste, successfully interspersed in this “combustible” space. Aftertaste. Well, of course, long, long, how could it be otherwise. Gar, coffee, iodine, menthol. Well, what can I say? Of course, this is a "classic of the genre." Honorary and brightest representative of the "Classic Malts of Scotland" series from Diageo. Each member of the smoky whisky cohort from Fr. Isla is unique in its own way, each has its own bright distinctive style, somewhere even directly opposite to its competitor. In many ways, for this we love and appreciate them. Lagavulin 16, as it were, absorbs all the best of them and thus “reconciles” them, bringing them to a common denominator. This whisky can be enjoyed endlessly, especially as long as it remains quite affordable through all sorts of promotions. All of the above, of course, refers to regular releases, and not to limited editions and barrel-strength releases - I have not yet climbed into such "wilds". 87 points out of 100.

S 7 Opened for 6 months. H2H with PC Islay Barley and Ardbeg Blaaack, now Laga 16’s low ABV is setting itself back here. [83-85] I'll get a bottle unless my bank account says otherwise. N 27 Slightly oily & sweet coastal smoke. Moderately peated with more smoke than peat here. Tinned fruits (yellow peaches, raisins). Kelp, sea salt. Dry oak. Lapsang souchong. Creamy vanilla. A whiff of cinnamon, mint sprig, and brown sugar. P 26 Medium body. Again, savoury peat to start, but now slightly more earthy. More peat than smoke. Juicy ripe fruits. Malty. Warm, unintrusive baking spices cause no challenge to drink. Plenty of smoked oak. F 23 Mid finish. Mildly fruity and oaky. The peat leaves a rather dry mouthfeel. Weak spices at the back.

It could be much better if bottled at 46+% ABV, NCF. Still, it's an absolute classic and one of the best mass-produced whiskies.

Complexity is the key to this whisky. Soft smoke making way to sweet notes, finishing off with some mint and menthol rolling across the tongue. Expertly bottled at 43% to not really need water to reduce "burn" but a little bit opens it up well. 92/100

Lagavulin 16 has changed over the years, it has lost some and gained some. It is not better or worse. It is different. Heavier on the dry smoke, less sweetness. Still lots of depth and development in glass and on the palate. Very awarding.

A classic. Islay, 16, under 50, -: you do not get that much anymore these days. Meanwhile, I think that he would stand 46% better. But that's probably daytime dependent.

I am a non-smoker and it was clear to me that this would not be a top tasting for me. In addition, it was one of my first Islay whisky ever and at the same time the knowledge afterwards, that I don't have to go to this island urgently. I respect this characterful dram and especially the distillery behind it. That's why I don't want to give it any points, because it is definitely worth every penny for lovers.

Is this whisky overrated and overhyped? Definitely not! Lagavulin 16 is an outstanding Islay single malt and a cornerstone of Scotch whisky culture. Intense peat smoke with hints of iodine and seaweed dominates the nose, merging with soft and yet substantial sherry cask sweetness. On the palate, it tastes full-bodied, peppery and deliciously sweet with dried fruits and an overwhelming blast of dry peatiness. The finish is prolonged, warming and spicy. Maybe I was unlucky with my batch, because my Lagavulin 16, bottled 2019, doesn't have much to offer apart from a massive smoke note. In a bar I recently had a Lagavulin 16 that clearly came from a much better bottling, here I could taste a lot more fruit and wood. The rating refers to Lagavulin 16. yo bottled 2019. Too bad that Lagavulin has such fluctuations. In direct comparison with an approximately equally expensive Ardbeg Uigeadail, the Lagavulin loses a lot for me because of the lack of complexity.

There's been an opinion this 16yo flagship whisky has declined in character over the years. I also think this is the case. I'm guessing there's less older stock in the blend and the rare old sherry barrels are probably being replaced with younger ones and maybe sherry seasoned casks. That said, it's still a great scotch and one of my favorites. I feel incomplete if it's not on my shelf. Nose: Lapsang souchong tea, charred meat, mud, swamp grass. Faintly fruity. Roasted peanuts. Smells a bit medicinal - betadine. Palate: Sweet. The peat takes on a mossy funkiness here. Finish: Strongly phenolic. Late seaweed.

I see why this is a classic and I'm happy to have a first bottle of this. I also see why people think it's overpriced, but at the moment I don't care too much. What more to write than in the opening text of the review. I just love her. For example, with the 10th Summer Ardbeg, Lagavulin will get peat and heavier. Ardbeg 10 Yo is fresher and more iodine. If you want to stay on the islands but want more salt and iodine, then there's Caol Ila. First of all, I was afraid to do it. But then I tried it, and the water will give Lagavulin another dimension, interesting, one that is worth trying. But it was enough to try it once. Next time I will enjoy it at full 43%.
this is a smoker I like; beautiful standard, which nobody overwhelmed; a few more turns would be good for the malt

very high quality but mainstream, spicy, yummy, elegant, even with 43% full-bodied spicy - nevertheless a devaluation for color and 43% at the presentation
H2H- Lagavulin through the ages - as usual logic would dictate that the older ones would be better, but will that be the case? I already did a head to head of the 21, 25 and 30 and found the 25 to be better than most other people and between the 3 not that much in it so it will be interested to taste again. Lagavulin 16 is favourite of many on here for a go to islay dram and once price has been taken into account I can gauge the best value and I suspect the 16 will do well here. Nose The first to be discounted was the Jaz festival2015 and the 30 year but that might be because they were more delicate. next was the 21 year 1991 then the 37 year which left the NAS 1960`s, 16 year, 21 year 1985 and the 25 year. The 30 year was a little delicate in this company. The big question is and the one that should give us all hope is that there was little in the first 6 placings and the 16 year was not far behind but the exta years maturation told. If You took price into consideration then the 16 year can hold its head up high.

A very complex whisky, yet easy to drink. Alcohol strength softened by 16 years of aging, well hidden. In the aroma, strong notes of sherry shrouded in peat smoke, in the taste of raisins, bitter chocolate, forest fruits, then delicate peppery and aftertaste of almonds and oak, all strongly and pleasantly covered with peat smoke. A classic of the genre

The aroma is licorice, sour, lots of grains. Taste: grain, peat, smoke. Good balance and symbiosis. Compared to 10 - better balanced, sweetness, peat, smoke and barley - all equally.
Smokey taste that lingers on the tongue for a long time.
An absolute classic. Impossible not to love it, even though it contains E150a and is at 43%. If Diageo ever decides to prostitute it even further, its place will be taken by a Torabhaig or a Sanaig. Predominant notes: barbecue, Provencal herbs. Complexity: medium. Essential for any whisky journey. 83 - 85 | Very good

All the pieces fit well together, but it's limited by its low ABV and mouthfeel. It's a touch too light for such heavy flavors, though I wonder if some of those flavors - the fudge specifically - would be as visible at a higher ABV. I wanted to dislike this whisky: it's omnipresent, over-marketed, watered down, and chill-filtered. I'm over the moon: I understand why it's a standard.

The mighty aristocrat of Islay. I don't think anyone's senses are able to remain indifferent to this perfect combination of smoke, peat, iodine, bourbon and sherry. It is far from being the most complex, the most delicious, not to mention the most natural whisky, but that doesn't stop it from being a timeless classic.
Well, the oldest, smokiest and most expensive of Diageos Classic Malts is also the best standard under 18 for me. Even if my favorite whiskys have different names.
2017 - I first encountered this in a blind tasting - it was the 'control' whisky used to assess other whiskies costing from £150 up to £7000, and this one scored the highest in my books. Looking back, maybe the person arranging the tasting was making some sort of point about whisky pricing! It was probably unfair to compare a big peaty Islay to the other whiskies. Anyway, I went and bought a bottle (£39 at the time). Suffice to say that bottle was the only whisky I drank for several months, and then I bought more, and stockpiled. I don't think I really need to add flavour notes - everyone who uses this site knows this whisky. I have tried better whiskies in my life, but not many. Perhaps my rating is still influenced by nostalgia, and this whisky was certainly my 'first love', but it's still a classic worthy of a good score. 4.0/95 Mar 2019 - Distillery tour. On the day I tried a variety of special and older expressions, none of which were as delicious, in my book, as the 16. At the end of the tour we were told we could have any dram from the current range in the bar. For me, "The 16, please". Jan 2020 - A new batch at Melody, but coming towards the end of the bottle. Aroma very muted. Taste is dodgy - quite off. A touch flat and bitter with not much smoke. Weird. Mostly orchard fruits but very papery oak. Smoke isn't there. Quite a prominent bitterness. What's going on here? Bad batch. Holy moly I know whisky is a variable product but this is something else. Oxidised? 2.85/69 Nov 2024 - Second pour from a 70cl bottle picked up in 2019 for £35. Today's price: £70 if you're lucky. Empty aroma, the caramel colour will trick you into smelling more than you actually smell, but there's not much there. Taste - thin, soft biscuity oak with the rounded smoke on the finish. The smoky finish is nice, but that's all there is. The palate is empty, one-dimensional and wishy-washy. Was this what Lagavulin always was? Are my memories of it valid? 3.4/81
People say that this is kind of newbie Islay womaniser, crowd pleaser, smooth operator.Yes it is but if you like rough and tumble for-play visit that neighbour spicy Talisker or those dumpy Campbeltown boys.

Personally think it is the most charming core range of Islay Island, single malt whisky, In the past, these 16yo malts only sold for around NTD1300, which can be said to be super crazy. The previous publicity said that 16 yo can best express the taste that the distillery wants to express, so the basic model is as high as 16 years old. However, in recent years, the young 8-year-old wine has been launched as the core range, and it is still very important in business. And this year, the price has also risen by a lot, returning to the price that it should have been 16 years old. I regret not buying more before... The total taste is 89 points, and the price does not affect the score. [2022.1.30] In just one year, its price has almost become 200% of the original price. At this price, it's hard to buy. Fortunately, there are many excellent peated whiskies on the market to choose from. 89 points total for taste, -1 point for price, 88 points total.

| Нос | 87 | N) Nurungji, Light Smoky, Seaweed (Salty), Old Furniture, Green Grape, Orange, Pear, Apple Matured Peat + Balanced Bourbon + Sherry Harmony = Balance The peat aroma is the first to hit, giving the impression of a whisky that might have been wild in its youth but has mellowed gracefully over time. The nutty and toasty scent of nurungji (scorched rice) pairs well with subtle smoky and salty notes reminiscent of seaweed. The weighty scent of old wooden furniture follows, before bright citrus and fruity notes of green grape, orange, pear, and apple emerge. It feels like a well-balanced blend of bourbon and sherry cask influences. |
| Вкус | 87 | P) Smoky, Green Grape, Apple, Tangerine, Sulfur, Dust, Dark Chocolate This whisky is dangerously smooth! Its balance and softness make it incredibly easy to drink, and it’s easy to lose track after three or four glasses. While the ABV isn’t overwhelming, the flavors are compact and well-structured, like a perfectly shaped hexagon. Subtle smokiness and sulfur add to the overall volume, while green grape and apple notes come to the forefront. However, the fruitiness isn’t fresh—it leans more towards a sticky, jam-like quality, likely due to the sherry cask influence. |
| Финиш | 87 | F) Smoky, Milk Chocolate, Apple, Candy, Umami The finish leaves nothing to be desired—it’s harmonious from start to end. Gentle umami flavors and smokiness set the stage, followed by lingering notes of milk chocolate, candy, and apple. It’s the perfect finish for wrapping up a long day. |

Sweet and smooth for a smoky whisky. If I sometimes want a less strong whisky, I'll go for this one. It's an excellent whisky on its own, but considering the price, it's subpar for its price range. But with 43% ABV and added color, this whisky, which could potentially be a top-notch whisky, is a lesser experience than its competitors at the same price. Good, but not great (anymore).

Finished fifth bottle. Batch: L3017CM005 00003815 Lately, I’ve been going through a stressful period, and I needed something to bring me back to my comfort zone—and this bottle does exactly that for me. It’s like coming back home. Nose: Excessive and restrained at the same time. Unmistakable: rich bonfire (almost bacon) notes and lemon peel form the backbone of the experience without dominating. Balancing them are red fruits, rancid lemon, maritime notes (shellfish), herbal hints (rosemary), floral touches (honey), old leather, concentrated vanilla, a bit of iodine, damp old house. Complex, but not overly so. Palate: Intense, rich, layered, and wonderfully varied; yet at the same time, balanced. The toasted wood turns into toasted bread, toffee, and coffee, and blended with the herbal and floral notes, into salty, roasted black tea. Hints of smoldering coal. Salty notes (brine), coastal touches (seaweed, iodine, organic matter) complement the more orthodox sherry notes (dates, figs, red fruits, nuts, tobacco). All of this rises on a solid background characterized by citrus fruits, vanilla, and old oak. On the palate, it evolves, starting to reveal notes of leather and malty, quite farmy undertones. The intensity of the notes is far more sophisticated than many people give it credit for; every detail is perfectly placed, playing its appropriate role. Much more complex than the nose. Finish: Delicious, but still, slightly underwhelming compared to the nose and palate. The oak and nuts transform into cinnamon and clove, slightly spicy. Lemon fades into the background, giving way to ash, more coffee, chocolate, and very rancid raisins, with hints of tire and gasoline. Tobacco coats everything in a layer of aromatic smoke. The truly maritime notes make themselves fully felt, leaving, after long pauses, a sensation of sun-warmed seawater. It builds up, giving rise to what I consider the most characteristic aspect of Lagavulin bottlings—difficult to describe. A blend of herbal peat, mineral lemon, and grilled seafood. Sweet, smoky, toasted, spicy, salty, savory. Elegant, warm, cozy, welcoming; despite being, at the same time, interesting, rich, and slightly challenging. In fact, that balance between familiarity and challenge is probably what keeps me coming back to Lagavulin 16 again and again. Unfortunately, this bottle belongs to the group of Diageo releases that gets worse with every new batch. But, in my opinion, the decline in quality is very gradual, and for this reason, it remains an absurdly delicious bottle. However, I do notice that the citrus and charred wood notes continue to increase, while the sherry, leather, and old wood notes are being pushed to the periphery. Not all of this is negative, though; I’d say this is the most maritime Laga 16 I’ve ever tasted—the iodine notes are no longer a distant suggestion, which I quite enjoy. Yes, filtering this whisky and watering it down below 46%, achieving a texture too thin for its profile, is objectively a crime against humanity. But I just can’t stop loving it.

A proper daily dram, with good sherry influence. A very gentle Islay. This bottle has been opened for over one year, and the last some drams were staid in the bottle for about one year, thus make it less powerful. However, it still very enjoyable. I have opened 3rd bottle Laga 16yo for my new daily dram, together with my other Ardbeg.
Wonderful integrated peat in this single malt. Everything is in harmony. Also a great roundness. Interesting impressions of peat-fields combined with a pleasant depth in maturation. Very recommendable standard. Tastings with Armin Fuchs. Attention: Please look at the 200ml version!

One of the best, if not the best entry times Islay has to offer. A must-have for anyone who likes smoky whisky. Over many years, a constantly extremely high quality is offered here, without frills, without marketing and at a fair price. Here the world is still fine.
2015: ‘A whisky drinkers’ staple’ N: After reading Serge’s review seeing him scoring it an impressive 90 [for the last four years running actually], i thought its time to revisit this classic as i seem to on an annual basis aswell. Starts off on sour-lemon tea, maritime notes of oysters & mussels in a butter sauce and reminds me of some of the latest Ardbegian NAS releases with its peaty, bonfire>farmy<vegetal base, although the age here speaks for itself and sets it apart from its neighbours’ expressions in that respect. T: Comes in all at once. A few descriptors include bitter, zesty, orange, grapefruit and tobacco, but I’m not getting too much detail. Im mainly picking up on the weight and depth of a well aged malt as theres no doubting the steady wood influence - there must be lots more age than than its 16yo badge would suggest F: In many ways the action happens now. The salty oak shows its worth, the bitter edge buffering up to the vegetal savoury>sweetness. This is a maritime dram all the way through with the smoke reserved and under handed, but ever present at all times. Ashy, peat resides as does salty-black tea [Lapsang Souchong] and sweet<soured lemons. C: Looking back at my past scores, I’ve been rather consistent too. Only in 2013 did i notch it up to a B+, otherwise I’ve always found this to be a textbook B grade. Very much a whisky drinkers’ staple. Scores a B 2014: N: That's Lagavulin without doubt, although the similarity with Caol Ila [this year particularly] is worth a mention. Limestone caves, lemony, citronella, washing-up liquid, oily peatiness, seaweed, brine, T: Sweeter than you'd expect, but ultimately its watery and underpowered. Peat smoke later comes later F: Fruity, smoky and briny. Some light pepper seasoning and some fresh aniseed. Briny and oily. Not dissimilar to Ardbeg either, but lacks a certain ’Je ne sais quoi’. C: Maybe 'perfectly boring' is unfair. H’ow about ‘Subtle and nicely crafted' - better? Scores a B 2013: ‘One man’s ceiling is another man’s floor’ N: No mistaking Islay here. Cowpats and fresh cream, also diary ice-cream with walnut oil, ash, butter, icing sugar, hazelnuts and engine oil. Later, Godiva fresh chocolate truffles, citronella and spiced fruit burdock cordial. All very polite and lots to like. T: Light watery, smoky, oily, briny ethanol arrival becoming slightly thicker with bitter<sweet charred wood spices which build a tad before revealing fennel/chives, endive and vegetal saline tannins which take a while to unwind. There are oranges here too, something between a blood orange and a seville orange with succulent and condensed sweetness F: ashy vanilla joins the oily smoky wood and theres a vegetal sweetness too - sweet roasted shallots accompany that endive and that spiced burdock cordial remains true. Black tea comes through most strongly at the end. Extremely long finish which contains a peculiar interplay between the oil, vanilla, coffee/caramel, ash, and those fresh sweet vegetal tannins coupled with the cordial. Fascinating stuff C: Ever so polite, ever so restrained and ever so refined. Fantastic dram but i always find myself wanting that little something extra which is why i never get too excited about Lagavulin in general. Maybe i needed to spend more time with this classic and today i did. As a result i got that something else, found encapsulated within that curiously fascinating complex finish. The nose was pretty splendid too and today i perceived the palate overall to be delicate rather than underpowered. The 16yo is a class act and its consistently good. Having said that it has limitations, mainly in its resolute reservedness, but also - that sweet/veg/fresh burdoch tannic-ness on the finish, whilst curious and delightful is also a little tiring and sickly. Hey ho, ‘one man’s ceiling is another man’s floor’. One to be enjoyed for sure. Scores a B+ Further reading: ‘That’s not Lagavulin’

Whiskydream.de writes ... Lagavulin 16 years The Laga16 shines amber in the glass. In the nose, clear notes of smoke and seaweed unfold as well as toasted oak. All very sweet (lots of sherry, little vanilla). Over time, dried fruits are noticeable. Overall, very pleasant, clear as mountain water with a very subtle sharpness. (88) Taste: Salty smoke (again seaweed) and pepper on the tongue, followed by oak, light vanilla and noticeable Sherry sweetness. In the background a slight bitterness arises. Dried fruits (dates) and a little citrus fruits make the aroma even more complex. Overall, very complex without crushing. Rather playful, medium and medium. (89) In the finish now comes some leather added. For quite some time oak and sherry sweetness remain. It remains a pleasant, warming, comforting feeling. What can you say? It is sixteen years old, from Islay, with sherry cask influence, tasty to boot, AND still quite affordable. A staple in the whisky world and well worth every Penny, Cent, Dime.
A good swampy and sticky peat comes to your nose, accompanied by a dose of lemon and sherry. The smoke serves as a binder to all this, it envelops the dried fruits, as well as a marinated and iodized touch. Grape? Blackberry? And of course smoked tea. It seems very deep at first, but in the end it's quite fresh and fruity, the peat doesn't eat everything up. A little coarse salt makes your mouth water. It's time to dip your lips. The sherry immediately comes to the fore, combined with a hint of lightly salted caramel. The tea becomes stronger in the finish, and slightly peppery. It's long in the mouth, without being violent. In short, incredible complexity and length on the palate, we remember in particular the notes of smoked tea. https://ilikesky2020.blogspot.com/2020/04/lagavulin-16-yo-43-original-bottling.html

I usually open a bottle come Christmas time, and almost every year (if the vagaries of batch variation don‘t intervene), I‘m reminded of how good this household staple still is - and why, many moons ago, I've fallen in love with it in the first place. For this cherished tradition, and the platonic ideal of Lagavulin 16, my initial gateway to the world of whisky: unabashed 91 points.

Just the perfect Islay single malt for me
Personally, I don't prefer excessive iodine, and I really dislike metallic notes, but in the case of Lagavulin 16, I can drink it without worrying too much. I think I would have been more satisfied if there had been a little less iodine note, but that's a matter of personal preference. Overall, it is very delicate and shows various layers, making it fun to drink. This bottle seems to be even more interesting as the taste changes as it is aerated. The biggest drawback is the watery feeling that comes from the alcohol content, so if a CS version of Lagavulin 16 is released, I am willing to rush out and shout “Take my money”.

| Нос | 88 | No buzz and soft. Overall, there is little overpowering scent and the layers are diverse. - The nutty flavor of the malt is felt strongly at first. - A variety of peat flavors are mixed, with smoky, seaweed, iodine, and salty flavors all mixed together. - Dusty dried cranberry scent. It has a slight citrus flavor and reminds me of dried red fruit. - The scent of vanilla and apple spreads softly, with a hint of lemon citrus. - The sweetness of honey with the brightness of flowers. - As the initial malty flavor weakens slightly, it becomes a nutty nutty flavor mixed with oiliness. : N Summary - No outstanding scent, but fun with various layers. |
| Вкус | 87 | - As soon as it enters your mouth, it is filled with the scent of seaweed, with a little bit of iodine mixed in. The saltiness of the salt is also quite strong, followed by a smoky flavor. - The sweet taste of honey mixed with the bright flower scent is quite strong. - You can feel raisins mixed with a dusty feel, and there is a lot of water, so the taste is diluted with orange citrus mixed in. - The tongue has a mixture of slightly spicy pepper spice and a nutmeg nuance. The spice is not too much and just enough to keep your mouth from getting bored. - As the tasting progresses, the taste of the apple becomes stronger, but it has more minerals than the taste of the apple itself, so it feels like a slightly watery, diluted apple juice. :P Summary - Fun in multiple layers on soft feet. It's a shame it feels a little watery. |
| Финиш | 85 | The finish is long. - The watery apple taste comes through strongly at first, and there is a slight hint of vanilla. - The salty taste of salt fills the mouth, and the iodine flavor is also mixed with salt and becomes the main peat of the finish. - There is a slight hint of the oily sweetness of toffee, but the taste is not strong and changes into the oily flavor of nuts over time. - There is a slight metallic taste, but it is not excessive. - The dryness of the tannin remains quite strong on the tongue itself, so it feels like your mouth is dry. : F Summary - The feeling of fit is strong, and the delicate layers change slightly from beginning to end, giving a feeling of help. |
Total disappointment. I tested 2024 and it is different from version i’ve tested couple of years before. 2024 is so plain, that I can not recommend it either. The same story as for recent Laga 10.

| Нос | 87 | Smoky and clearly peated, with a medicinal edge (a bit like antiseptic lozenges). There are light notes of fig and lemon, some cereal/grain, plus hints of apple and grape. I also pick up a slightly lactic, sour tang and a touch of wood. The peat presence is obvious but not overpowering—overall it feels well balanced. The fruit becomes more noticeable as it sits in the glass. Early on it’s mostly smoke; later it leans more toward a damp, charred-wood impression, like wet wood that’s been burned. |
| Вкус | 87 | A gentle coastal note—seaweed/brine—alongside fig, smoke, and that medicinal character again. There’s a soft sweetness, some grape, pepper, and a light salinity. The body feels a bit lighter than I’d like, though there is a slight oily texture. |
| Финиш | 86 | Medium, with mild bitterness and a touch of astringency. Slightly oily, with lingering medicinal smoke, grainy notes, and pepper. |

Sadly I have only recently discovered this Scotch. Another Scotch with strong peat and smoke with a long finish. I'm only halfway through my first bottle at this point but I know I will be buying another one. Right now, the only thing that really separates it from Laphroaig for me is the price point. Lagavulin is typically $15 or more, more expensive than Laphroig, at least in my area.

Amazing Islay malt - very complex and all these mixtures of herbs, smoke, and medicine notes make all your taste receptors work with diligence. Sorry to know that price recently raised almost x2 times, but nevertheless, it is still one of the best affordable and accessible whiskies.
It took 4 years into my whisky journey to finally try this. I am not disappointed at all... maybe more appreciative of this classic bottling after many subpar and pretentious "integrity bottlings" (especially Highland ones). For 89 euros perfectly acceptable. In fact, in my overpriced location it is actually a pretty amazing price, almost a bargain. In this case, I don't care about chill filtration, artificial coloring or 43%, since this is just delicious and super versatile. Just a great classic single malt.

| Нос | 89 | Ever evolving nose. Smoky and phenolic (TCP), but after that super sweet, and quite diverse in that departement: barley sugars, toffee, honey glazed orange peel, ripe plums and figs, deep and ever-changing vanilla notes. Also darker notes: tar, black pepper, wood oils, leather. I love the balanced mix between sherry and refill bourbon casks, perfectly achieved. Some freshness pops up everynow and then (lime, sweet seashore breeze). Very, very good. |
| Вкус | 88 | Quaffable as hell, lightly but perfectly oily, just a perfect peaty everyday dram. Again sweet as hell (honey, juicy malt, dark sherry notes), but way more peppery and salty than the nose. Mossy, the wood is way more present here, way "darker" than the nose, deeply resinous, while being just as warm and welcoming. Some dried fruits and more varied citrus notes (grapefruit, "old" lemons). Very good once again, even if quite different from the nose. |
| Финиш | 87 | Medium-long, good as well but a tiny bit more forgettable than nose and palate. Focused on the peat, malt and on a deep wood development (aromatic peppers, honeyed herbs). Secondary notes here: salty toffee and drier citrus notes (peels), cherry/raisin chocolate, decaying vegetation. Very good single malt, famous and deservingly so. |

Lagavulin used to be the king of Islay Whisky. But in recent years the price went up, from 55 to 70€, and the quality keeps getting worse with every new bottle i get. This particular bottle however, was a whole different story. It was dominated by sulfur and the balance was off, seemed like everything was coming appart the smoke the leather, the medicinal felt like seperate not "glued" together. Lacked the usual creamy and rich flavours instead i got a sour and bitter taste. I tried to add water, oxidize it etc. I feel like i got a bottle from a bad batch and lost 70€ in the process. Needless to say i will not trust Lagavulin again

Really smooth, beats its 8 year old little brother in every way. I would even say it is the nobility of whiskies, a kind of standard for a quality single malt. After this it is difficult to taste anything else.
The Lagavulin 16 is a classic for good reason. Round, beautifully balanced, with gentle smoke and maritime influences. Was it better in the past? I don't know! As it is now, it's a fantastic, smooth smoky whisky that still deserves a place on any whisky shelf.

My 4 cl Sample was labelled "bottled 2002" without further information. I have always loved the 16 YO Laphroaig and believe it is one of the whiskies that offers best value for money.
One of the best standards, which I like to enjoy again and again. He is scratching at the quality of a whisky, which really inspires me in the long run, but is a bit (just a little) too simple for that. 89 points.

can be, surely the best whisky distributed in GMS !! and for a moderate price, almost not expensive enough !!
I had a better memory of it. A little disappointment, I probably evolved. An everyday Whisky at a very affordable price anyway. An effective daily dram.
The nose is very interesting, as is the value for money. Slightly short finish. Too bad it is filtered, caramel colored and its alcohol level is not a little higher, it would be a nugget, a bit like the 12 year old CS.
A great combination of sherry and peat, that will appeal to most whisky drinkers. And even many "Islay-deniers". Accessible even for newcomers to the world of peat. It is only 43 % though.

Tasted 30ml sample by Whisky.Hedonist in April 2021 Bottled 2010 Nose - stronger medicinal smell , lighter smoky for me Taste - spicy first, warm throat, and a blooming feel after swallowing Finish - lingering mild cough mixture like sweetness medium finish
Good smoking taste
Nose: quite sweet, smells of smoke, a lot of wine elements, some red fruit, some iodine cellar, sea, sand after the storm ???? Palette: smell fruit, a bit of ash, a bit of sweetness and butter, a bit of medical notes, the influence of Bourbon barrels is visible and the fruitiness is more in the direction of citrus, although it is not sour. At the finish, a bit of smoke and ash, drier and wineier.
This is a dame to kill for. Perfectly balanced peated whisky which is not only for drinking but also represents.
Nose: It's nice, a sort of 'jack of all trades' when it comes to the combination of sherry and peat - slightly medicinal smoke, salinity, some dry wood smoke or char as well, but also burnt ends barbecue, savory blood orange, glazed strawberries, even cherries. There is some nice buttery oak showing some age, along with an elegant perfume note, but despite these, this is still fresh and saucy and tangy. Lots of balsamic vinegar and green moss, and in one tasting, bitter prunes and dark chocolate. Rich but not overbearing, and very well balanced. Palate: The mouthfeel is medium-thin - that extra aging is really at odds with the low bottling strength. Peat is strong now but kept in check by lots of fruit: orange, juicy raisin, a sharp peach and some lime. The smoke turns a little more woody, and while still relatively balanced, this turns slightly more toward the bitter and savory end of the palate: dry wood and char, dry barbecue and salty pretzels, tannins, hot peppers, peppercorns. That said, there are subtle sweet notes of vanilla and sugary oil (think simple syrup); while still a well-rounded experience, this feels more watery with time. Finish: A medium length finish, bordering medium-long at times; soft sweet peat and more mild barbecue smoke, fig and orange chicken, orange zest and sweet peppers. There are some mature notes of dark chocolate and unsmoked tobacco leaf later on, but the oak has a pretty mild influence in the finish, leaving room for greenish notes and some coastal salt. We end with sweet fruit jams.
A timeless classic. It's a safe choice in any bar.

Great balance and its peat is more gentle than Ardbeg/Laphroiag. Touch of weak aftertaste maybe due to water down. A elegant version of Uigeadail

bottled 2023-4: 88 points bottled 2019 - 4.9.2019 - L9247CM007: 81 points bottled 2023-4: Pleasant aroma of grill, grilled meat, BBQ sauce, lots of fruit, sweetness of roasted and unroasted ripe fruit, smoke, burning wood, in the background I think there is iodine coming, another wave of sweet peat with slightly burnt fruit, now for a change I have added a whiff of saltiness. Rich, very pleasant, smoky-fruity aroma, beautifully composed. In the taste, grilled meat with BBQ sauce, gradually adding sweetness of roasted and ripe fruit, a few salty notes, charred wood, smoked honey sweetness, even a little feeling of smoked beeswax. In the finish, it feels like it is covered in a light layer of smoked honey and smoked beeswax, the smokiness fades, the sweetness of roasted fruit, charred wood and a little smoke from it. I enjoyed it. This whisky is one of the better ones in elementary education, which simply cannot be missed. 88/100 bottled 2019 - 4.9.2019 - L9247CM007: Out of curiosity, I added a Lagavulin bottled in 2019 to the comparison. Sweet peat with fruit, smoked fruit, a little saltiness, but it seems so soft to me, almost indistinct. A little smelly (compared to 2024). Smoky, smokey, peaty, toasted fruit. It doesn't smell bad, but indistinct, which detracts from it a lot. The taste is more pronounced than the aroma, pronounced sweetness of toasted fruit, light smokiness, saltiness, charred wood, ripe fruit, gradually sweetness to smoked honey. But again, not very pronounced (weaker decoction of the 2024). The peat fades in the finish, light smokiness, sweetness of toasted fruit. Overall, it was a good whisky, but it didn't impress much. I'll have to try it on its own, after the 2024 one it came out like a diluted version for supermarkets with a discount. In the older notes I liked it solo, but compared to the older one it also turned out worse. It was beaten by both the older one and now the newer one, maybe 2019 was a bit weaker.
A classic, that lingers on. Has not got the brash hit you in your face flavours of the 8 yo but smooth refinement of a 16 yo. The BBQ fires peaty smoke and takes you into smoked bacon aromas mixed with salty sea air. Slight medicinal with caramel and golden malt as the smoke endures. A light peaty quite smooth Islay dram. Having experienced this whisky over 20 years I can say it’s a lot more toned down loses a bit of character and less peaty than earlier versions.

| Нос | 85 | N: smoke, iodine, dried fruits, hay, barley A strong smoky aroma right from the start. A scent reminiscent of iodine solution. The heavy sweetness of dried fruits. Not fresh grass, but dry hay. Grainy notes like barley. |
| Вкус | 87 | P: iodine, smoky, dried fruits, hay, oak cask, dark chocolate, mint A continuation of the strong smoky and iodine notes from the nose. Where the nose was more smoke-forward, the palate leans more toward iodine over smoke. A deep sweetness from dried fruits. A flavor like putting dry hay in your mouth. Astringency from the oak cask. Dark chocolate with a high cacao content. A cooling freshness from mint. |
| Финиш | 86 | F: smoky, iodine, raisins, mint The smoke and iodine from the nose continue into the finish — with smoke taking the lead again here. The dried fruit note narrows down to something like raisins. A cooling freshness from mint lingers. |
Try it, don't doubt it. Your own impressions will be brighter than any words you read about it. A wonderful smoky whisky.

why a note on LAGAVULIN? one of the whiskys..where the glass can make you vary the pleasure, the scents and the finality !! besides the notes of wood, vanilla, iodine, smoked, fatty fish, earth, grass, bottom of barrel ... the emanations are not the same or do not arrive at the same time according to the glass in which we drink it ... a strange way to taste a wiseky ... a little different .... finally ... to finish, a very good affordable wiseky that does not leave insensitive !! And then, a final worthy of a big !!!

An excellent exemplary whisky, which can still be said - a classic, a reference molt, with its universal accessibility and distribution can be used as a reference point for building its own personal scale of assessments.
if I ever was to chose one single whisky for me I would not hesitate. this is my baby! could have this every evening! some say it is inconsistent in quality. i cannot find this, really!
Great oak and an experience...he does not take me somehow but he has something
Certainly not only for me, the Lagavulin 16 is the absolute reference for strongly smoky whiskys, which shows how well smoke can be incorporated. Always present, but still always room for other flavors, the smoke makes for a still surprisingly round composition. A classic, where every smoky whisky has to compete.

Matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. Wide primary, slow narrow secondary legs. Coloured, chill-filtered. A delicious dram. Classical Islay single malt. Water smooths it out by pushing the smokiness to the finish.
Winner in the TOP10 ranking of regular whisky releases in the world according to the Russian-speaking whisky community. After this victory, I wanted to refresh the memory of this release and make a description of it. This whisky is highly regarded here in Brazil, both by aficionados and the wealthy, because it arrives here costing at least double the normal price. Aging has brought smoothness and elegance, but leaves, at least for me, the peat only as an aromatic component. Perhaps that's the intention.

| Нос | 85 | Aroma: bacon, barbecue, vanilla, caramel, a warm spice like dried black pepper, slightly minty. With water, it seems as if they literally threw water on the grill, leaving behind ashes and burnt, wet wood, as well as vanilla and malt. |
| Вкус | 80 | It reverses the aromatic explosion, as vanilla came first and, although it's almost dry, the sweetness is quite low. Spices, malt, and old wood. Unfortunately, the peat was timid. With water, the vanilla and caramel increase, but it doesn't become a sweet whisky, thankfully. |
| Финиш | 77 | Medium to long finish with a slight peaty note, malty, dry, and with an aftertaste reminiscent of dried vanilla stored in grandma's old cupboard. |
Strong smoke hits yout from the start. Spices, sweet notes and iodine with peat
Does it live up to its legendary status? Yes. Is it good value (70,- euros in 2024)? Only if you haven't had it yet. It has the reputation of being a peat bomb - which it is - but it has much more to offer. This one stays interesting for at least two bottles. Buy one, finish it, finish 10 other bottles, then buy one again. Be on the lookout for bargains. 43% abv and chill filtered but still like this, can you imagine how good this could be...

Based on the bottle code, it's almost certainly a 2020 bottling. No specific bottling code exists. Not a super-complex malt, but definitely tasty and easy to drink. Robust and perfect for the coming winter.
Good, but disappointing, since I expected better. The nose was there initially, but quickly dissipated. The palate was gentle, too gentle. I almost suspect that the bottle was watered down slightly (I ordered this at a bar) since I experiences the same faults as when I overwater whisky at home. I will come back and reevaluate this when I acquire a personal bottle in the future.

Schöner Islay Everyday. TOP PLV
Positive surprise, great integrated smoke and sherry, nice dark and maritime and me as Fassstärk drinker not too easy with the 43%
Indispensable, delicious standard in constant high quality for a fair price (currently ~ 50 €) - one can only hope that it stays that way.
The spicy, phenol-smoking, steadily vanilla-forming creaminess of this Islay whisky, which develops from the whisky glass, is just as pleasant as it is incomparable.
Last night I had the chance to try 4 different Lagavulin 16 bottles, one a 20cl bought in 2017, and the others full size bottles from 2013-ish, late '90s (glass 1815 and Islay texts) and (probably) early '90s (with gold letter texts instead of glass). The two 'white horse' bottles were, as all know, quite different and of better quality, but it was interesting to note the differences between the recently opened 20cl bottle, and the one from 2013 that had been open for years. Despite having that much more time to breathe, the 2013 bottle was that tarry, strongly leathery thing my memory says Lagavulin is like in the 2000s, while the recent 20cl was similar but weaker in every sense: The nose more quiet and with notes I'd rather expect from the 12yo, the palate diminished, and the finish a thing you barely catch going by. The body and finish of the 2013 bottle are heavier and fuller. The 2013 deserves 88 points while the new one gets 87 on account of still being a very characterful whisky, but no longer better than for example Talisker 10 (87).
Heavy, solid whisky. Heavy sweetness is accompanied by a bit of smoke and light peat. Characterictic and memorable, but compared to other Islay expressions or say Talisker, this one seems to be a bit weak in its expression. Overrall surely no disapointment, despite I expected it to be more powerful.
