I summarize the official information on barrel aging as follows: 53% 1st-fill Bourbon Casks 31% 2nd-Fill Sherry Casks 16% 11 years in Sherry Casks, then 5 years Virgin French Oak, then Ex-Bourbon Casks Finally, all together, 40 ppm. I can't say for the life of me how all of this affected the final result. Leaving that aside: it tastes good, but overall remains somewhat indifferent. I expect a lot more from an 18-year-old PC, especially at this crazy price (€205).

How should one describe the character of the nose, as it emerges upon initial contact? Shy, reserved, subtle? Perhaps a bit of each. In any case, don't expect a brutal Islay stinker; things are more civilized here. Apricot jam, peach tart, and raisins. If you let it sit for a while, notes of freshly smoked ham and seaweed, cold peat smoke, fresh yeast dough, cumin, and rosemary emerge.

It connects seamlessly to the nose with an almost gentle and unexciting entry. Here, too, fresh, light fruits predominate at the beginning. Dry smoke, initially subliminal, then increasingly dominant. Nori leaves, smoked ham. Sweetened cocoa, milk coffee, sugar beet syrup, Werther's Original, toffee, malt beer. Very subtle spice, not further identifiable.

An 18-year-old Port Charlotte from the 2025 Christmas blind tasting hosted by Peter Moser's wonderful blog, Friend of Single Malt. Of course, I didn't recognize the whisky – but I still thought it was good. Embarrassingly enough, I estimated its age at around 10 years – oh well… Luckily, there's still some left in the sample, so I can taste the whisky again at my leisure. Port Charlotte releases its 2018 vintage in batches, the composition of which and the ABV can vary. The 2025 edition matured in a unique blend of 53% first-fill bourbon casks, 31% second-fill sherry casks, and 16% first-fill sherry casks. After eleven years, it received a five-year finish in French virgin oak casks. Following this, the whisky was married for the remainder of its maturation period in second-fill bourbon casks. glen-efze.de

Not a particularly peaty number, there seems to be quite a lot of sweetness and citrus in the glass - that said, it managed to bring a smile to my chops - well worth trying.

The peat is surprisingly gentle - not even earthy - there is quite a lot going on with sherbert lemons and a hint of coffee.

The mouthfeel is pleasant with a slim body to it - the taste is unexpectedly soft - the peat sits in the background, with notes of rosewood, a sweet citrus note and then just a hint of heat at the end.

Everything is very subtle. The whisky starts with fruity notes. Dried fruit, maybe raisins or cranberries. I have a gentle oak spice. All in all, I don't think it's particularly complex.

Fortunately the peat has faded some, making a well-balanced bottling. Most of the younger Port Charlotte's are peatier. I can't get into the malted nuances, but suffice it to say it comes out right. I would compare it favorably with some of the earlier Port Charlotte's, such as 2005. So it gets a high rating from me. My ratings are based on how much I like the taste. And this is a winner. September 2025. Peaches and cream and subtle peat. And long aftertaste. Tasted 1st on a rainy day October 2025. Good marriage of peat and distillate but not as distinctive as a single cask. Youngest cask 18 and apparently a number were chosen, with care. Peat continues into long aftertaste. A positive. And label declare ls heavily peated, which it is for 18 years. A negative is the cost. But so be it. In January 2026. 1st taste peat predominates. 2nd taste, better balance between distillate and peat. How come? My impression is our interpretations change due to alcohol influence on the brain. Not in a big way, but with the subtleties. Not so with food. August 2026. Tasted on a hot summer day in the US.

A surprisingly "quiet" PC...usually you're used to smoke blowing straight into your face, but this one is really tame and smooth. I like it in and of itself, but the price of 225 CHF is rather ambitious.

From the Distillery: A combination of first fill bourbon casks (53%) and second fill sherry casks (31%). A further small and interesting parcel of Port Charlotte (16%) was also filled into sherry casks for 11 years, before being recasked into Virgin French Oak for around five years. This spirit was then recasked into second fill bourbon barrels, before all components were married for bottling.

Aroma: Quite subtle, restrained, yellow stone fruits (peaches, apricots), marsh grass, old varnished furniture. Taste: Enveloping, dry, very pleasant subtle smoke, something from Asian cuisine, miso soup with seaweed, the second sip reveals sherry notes, again yellow stone fruits, peppery spiciness, plums and tobacco. Aftertaste: Dry, medium length, smoky and dried fruity. Considering the love for PS, the overall rating is 89, but minus one point for the current price. TOTAL: honest 88.

Wow - keeping the drink within the taste keeps bringing out more and more flavours! Largely features bourbon, with a touch of the sherried elements - a lovely dram! Color: Banana gold Nose: Honey, vanilla, some saltiness/savouriness, and a hint of burnt caramel Taste: Creamy, honey, cotton candy, apples, a maltiness which has been gently kissed by smoke. Finish: A long finish of honey, and the same slightly smoky maltiness

This isn't Port Charlotte. It's a cross between an older Bruichladdich, elements of Islay Barley, and Port Charlotte, with a bias toward Bruichladdich. Overall, no complaints. A wonderful, deep, and multifaceted Bruichladdich. 22 22 22 22

Another beautiful whisky, and it will certainly benefit greatly from oxidation. However, I can already say with certainty that I liked last year's bottling better, as it had more sherry/wine influences, which I generally prefer in PC. For fans of the purist PC profile!

Typical Port Charlotte smoke, but already showing depth. While slightly diminished, it's still robust and more complex than the 10-year-old. The cask influence is also quite pronounced. The fruit notes are difficult for me to discern behind the smoke, so I'd simply describe them as "fruit compote" and riper citrus notes. Thanks to the 51.5% ABV, the flavor is beautifully intense. It actually needs a bit of water for me. I'm happier at around 48%. It becomes more complex and approachable. The smoke and fruit compote are also discernible. Salty sea air, a touch of "cowshed," but already broken down into more complex forms. The second-fill sherry adds interesting notes. The finish is also pleasant, but for me, it's one of the weakest aspects of the whisky and is currently preventing me from giving it an 89. It develops a pleasant dryness towards the end. I find €200 a bit too high a price, but if it's on sale for €170 (like right now), then Port Charlotte fans should definitely consider it. The whisky is simply a good example of a well-made, well-balanced, older, smoky style, and depending on your personal budget, it can be worth the extra cost compared to a solid 10-year-old.

I also have the Port Charlotte 10 WID:112320 in my glass. The 18 is naturally less smoky than the 10, as the smoke in the 18 has had more time to dissipate. The barrel influence is also more pronounced in the 18 than in the 10. Somehow, though, the 18 seems almost too smooth and a bit toothless to me. I almost enjoy the 10 a bit more. Sure, it's rougher, but it does it with conviction. With the 18, I get the feeling it doesn't really know what it wants to be. It wants to be a gentleman, but it lacks the elegance and authority required to achieve that. I like the 18, but for the price I expect more.
Direct comparison to the first batch 2023/24: The nose of the second batch 2025 is basically similar to batch 1, same smoke, but seems a bit milder and rounder, less wood spice. On the palate, the second batch is significantly sweeter and milder than Batch 1, and also nuttier. The typical dried fruits of the Oloroso casks come through, while Batch 1 has a significant (harsh) influence from the French wine casks. Once again, the smoke of the two versions is barely distinguishable. The finish of the new batch is more harmonious and less ashy than Batch 1, but just as long. Overall, I still see Batch 1 slightly ahead, but the evaluation was made immediately after Batch 2 opened - so it could still improve further.

Honey in the aroma, honey in the flavor, plus heather, even stronger in the finish. And then comes the best part: oily honey lingers on the tongue for minutes. Water intensifies the aroma, the flavor becomes sharper, the oiliness fades slightly after the finish. Overall, very lovely.
