The second release of the Icons of Campbeltown by Glen Scotia is a 14-year-old medium peated whisky with a Barolo Red Wine finish. It is a whisky that tells a story. It is about the Archangel Michael, who defeated the fire-breathing dragon and is a patron saint of firefighters and police officers. What does that have to do with Campbeltown? In the former whisky capital with its many, certainly questionable distilleries, there was always the danger that the alcohol would ignite and cause a devastating fire. For example, on December 17, 1899, the courageous intervention of the Glen Scotia team succeeded in extinguishing a fire at the neighboring Dalintober Distillery before it became fatal. OK, it's a story that fits the distillery. And the whisky offers more than just the story: It has a defined age, a special maturation and it is uncolored and un-chillfiltered. That's how it should be.
Minus – not really my taste – maybe this strange tannin? (but I recommend it to fans of the combination of salt and peat) Plus for oiliness and body complexity (smoke, trophy, sweetness, fruitiness) Nose: Varnish, this edition already makes your nose whirl with campfire smoke, burnt caramel, burnt raspberries. Taste: Fat, creamy, burnt vanilla, salt, cranberries, fresh hot bread. Finish so winey, lots of oak notes.
Nose : Honey, yellow fruits, almonds, a hint of peat, leather and a few light berries shine through. Palate: Nicely oily, creamy, honey, ripe fruit, lovely sweetness, leather, peat, red fruit, oak spice. Alcohol is nicely integrated. A delicious Glen Scotia. Finish: Medium-length, warm, honey, tobacco, peat smoke, and a few berries. Bright fruits and, I suspect, warm caramel. Very nice.

Smooth, smooth, if you like barolo barrels, you're in good hands here. Not a high-flyer, but well balanced, alcohol perfectly integrated. Smoke is a nice addition

Got a taster of this dram at the Glen Scotia distillery after the tour, so didn’t have the time to let it air extensively, which (I’m told) should do it good. Having said that, I would have loved to love it more… It’s a good whisky and the packaging is great, but the price…

great whisky
Nice whisky, would maybe buy a bottle if it weren't this expensive. Not a fan of the label art, though. Edit: I received a sample of this whisky so I could try it another time, and unfortunately in a more focused environment than at a trade show I find that the wine and the make aren't working together well for me. I'm guessing the distillery wanted to do something else than just a regular peated release, and maybe this style has fans, but for me it tastes a bit odd and even if not outright bad, not something I crave. I have to downgrade my score from 83 to 81.
Quite good for GS, one of the better ones.

| Нос | 87 | The aroma is so strong, I don't know if it suits me. But it's probably okay. Malt, light smoke, tobacco, oil, wine. |

Scent: Salty sea air, damp oak and a dry, ashy smoke, behind which the Barolo finish clearly shows with tart red fruits, cherries, currants, grape skins, light leather and dark chocolate notes, overall more dry and fruity than sweet. Taste: First salty malt, then red berries in a kernel-like form, some cherry and plum, subtle sweetness, then pronounced tannins from the red wine barrel, plus charred wood and medium smoke. Finish: Medium-long, dry and spicy, with some smoke, subtle pepper, oak and salt lingering, accompanied by tart red fruit and a slightly astringent aftertaste. Conclusion: A good Glen Scotia with a clearly recognizable Barolo influence, together with the maritime character and the moderate smoke, creates a serious, exciting and complex dram that demands attention.

After last year's good release, this one is average. Very hot, bitter, and expensive. I'm glad I didn't buy a bottle.

Lightly to medium peated. There are some red berries and dried yellow fruits behind the smoke. Malt, honey, caramel, truckload of black pepper. Not very complex. The balance is suboptimal. I am not impressed by this release... Seems like unpeated Glen Scotias are more up my alley. Also, I am not a huge fan of wine finishes in general.

| Нос | 86 | Good, but not great. In terms of complexity and balance it promises something the palate and finish simply do not deliver. |
| Вкус | 83 | Too spicy neat. With water the flavors start to disintegrate... :( Additionally, some off flavors start to appear. Something slightly chemical/plastic. Not an ideal combination of the GS spirit, peat, and wine finish. |

Amazing. Simply amazing. Complex, dirty, slightly smoky, (subtle) wine cask influence. This tastes fantastic and you can sit with a dram and enjoy it for hours on end, which is good because this whisky benefits greatly from air. If you let the dram oxidize 20, even 30, minutes it's a whole other experience, I definitely recommend this. Side note: I am a fiend for Campbeltown whisky, peat head and also love red wine cask aged/finished whiskies, so this should be right up my alley on paper and well... it delivers just that. My biggest gripe with this is the price: This is about 115-130€ here in Germany and is a bit too expensive, imho - I picked this up on discount and am very happy I did. I wouldn't buy another one at the MSRP tho... (uni student budget) tl;dr: If you like the Campbeltown/ Glen Scotia style and have the money to spare, this is a great pickup.

| Нос | 92 | Typical Glen Scotia notes to start off with: Briny, like the dirty sea water from a harbour, apple cider, baked goods (shortbread?), sweet vanilla to round it off. Smoke is there, but very subdued. Then the wine cask comes through: red berries. They are interwoven with the other notes perfectly. Alcohol is integrated very well. Nose is a bit closed off at first, but opens up with time. (With water: sweeter, more smoke, less intense) |
| Вкус | 95 | Fist off, oily. Mouth filling. Viscous. Starts off sweet - vanilla pudding, salted caramel, with more peat present. Some crisp green apples/ apple cider vinegar - this whisky breathes the Glen Scotia distillery character. It's creamy, dirty, slightly dry with peat interwoven with all the notes. In one word: a symphony. The wine cask influence is felt mostly with a slightly drying texture, but also some red berries, mostly raspberry and cherry for me to go along with dried fruit, like papaya and apricot. Also some cocoa notes. What I love about this, is how long you can "chew" on a sip and it keeps evolving in your mouth. It's fantastic. |
| Финиш | 95 | One word: long. This goes on and on and on. Now more of that "funk" comes through in a very pleasant way. Sweetness, oak, berries. Even minutes after swallowing it still lingers. |
Blind
An interesting, funky bottling, particularly impressive with its nose and complex finish. Key positives are that it beautifully carries the Campbeltown funk while offering a mature Glen Scotia experience with atypical notes. It definitely justifies its price; I would love to have more. Value for money: Excellent! Would I buy it again?: Absolutely!

| Нос | 89 | Full, cheesy, and funky notes. A lovely, slightly sweet red wine-like quality. Powdery, slightly medicinal, medicine cabinet-like, and perhaps band-aid-like. Almond flour. Delightful earthiness and slightly tart stone fruit; ripe nectarine. Ash. Over time, a slightly metallic, coin-like side and green plum. Marshmallow perhaps. Yellow plum jam. Overripe loquat. Straw. Almond and hazelnut cookie. A hint of beurre noisette. Green apple compote. A distinct vanilla. At times, I detect notes that I can liken to Ardmore's peat. Extremely complex and layered. What a nose! |
| Вкус | 86 | On the palate, the saltiness and briny aspects are very noticeable. A slightly delayed sweetness; slightly above average. Green and yellow plums also come after the briny and the ash that follows. A hint of caper. It feels a little closed on the palate. Vanilla sugar. A hint of white pepper. Green apple candies. Caramel and then malt biscuit. A medicinal and earthy peat and powdery notes. No flaws, but the slightly closed taste isn't a plus. With a little water, the malty and peat aspects open up; charcoal and malt cracker notes. Hazelnut notes become more pronounced. |
| Финиш | 88 | A medium intensity but with a finish that could be described as long. Peat accompanies it until the very end, along with sweet and, if not ripe, past stone fruits and yellow berries. Cotton candy, marshmallow. Haddock, perhaps anchovy. A slight olive-like, green olive undertone influenced by the briny side. Almond cookies. No burning sensation; just a warming one. No bitterness either. A slightly lactic side; pickled cucumber. Quite enjoyable. |

| Нос | 88 | Fruity and crisp. Light peat in the background. Fresh clean fire. Curry spices. Turmeric. Fresh mint. |
| Вкус | 86 | Vanilla, wood, quite thin after my previous whisky (Cley Moscatel finish). Wet forest. Rotting leaves. |
| Финиш | 85 | Marzipan, smoky, light |
Solid release from Glen Scotia; bright sweetness first on the palate (green & tropical notes), sea salty, then vinuous with smoldering, dry campfire smoke rising up and out. Have never experienced 56.8% ABV so well integrated before.
Even though I'm not a fan of this distillery, I have to admit that sometimes they can surprise me. I'm not looking for a whisky with a pronounced red wine finish, but this combination with light smoke is quite successful. The aroma is dense, heavy, tobacco, slightly smoky, baked fruits like plums and oranges. The taste is slightly spicy, chocolate-bitter, spicy, fruity-sour with a funky slightly salty finish.
Rich - more smoky, sweet, brutally strong and barrel-aged - "matured" (relative to their young releases) "Glen Scotia"
