Brilliant young Ben Nevis, definitely one of the best whiskies currently in the price range up to €50. Truly a little gem - two bottles secured for the future. Update March 2025: The first opened bottle confirms my review of the sample. Everything was done right!

Spicy/sharp somewhat dirty/muffy sherried whisky. My guess as the composition goes would be 2 ex-sherry and 1 ex-bourbon cask vatted together. For under 9 years of age, this whisky is quite an achievement, has to be said! For me, that was one of the better Ben Nevises I had so far. Ideal for cold rainy days. Medium complexity and viscosity. Excellent price/performance ratio at around 50 Euros.

Нос86Good quality ex-sherry casks are at work here! Muffy, dusty, appears to be older as it really is, dried fruits, red berries, dates, figs, possibly orange peel, something earthy, malt, baking spices, toffee, hint of vanilla.

This Ben Nevis is a delicious young sherry whisky. On the nose, its youthfulness isn't entirely concealed by the slight alcohol peaks and effervescence. This is where I like it least. However, its taste and finish are all the more pronounced. There are lovely sherry aromas, but they're not overly overdone, and they even make the whisky seem older than its 8-year-old age. I think that, in addition to sherry casks, a bourbon cask was also involved among the three casks used. Elixir Distillers often mixes casks, and I've often liked the result. A fairly solid sherry profile with a youthful vigor, but with some rough edges. It's dangerously drinkable, and the bottle probably won't last too long.

Нос86Sherry casks were clearly at work here. But they were definitely not one of those now famous and infamous wet casks that overpower the malt with extreme fruit and sweetness. While this Ben Nevis has a youthful, crisp, and tangy alcohol content, its aroma profile is considerably older. Behind the slight alcohol peaks lie well-balanced aromas of dark dried fruit, raisins, and a certain dusty, musty quality that makes the malt seem older and more mature. You might also find a few traces of sulfur if you look for it. A few drops of water reveals blossom honey, and the aroma spectrum brightens overall. The fruit gives way to apricots and ripe peaches. I like the subtle mustiness, that special dirty note that lies in the background; it adds dimension to the whisky.
Вкус87The whisky opens with a surprisingly sweet flavor. Dried dates and figs accompany honey and blueberries. Pipe tobacco, leather, and a generous portion of raisins complete the sherry cask aromas. Afterwards, the spiciness increases due to the influence of the oak casks, without drifting toward the unpleasantly sharp side. The alcohol is much better integrated in the palate than it is on the nose. A slightly bitter note emerges towards the finish, as if melting a few pieces of dark, bitter chocolate in the mouth. But the bitterness quickly dissipates.
Финиш87The dried fruits, along with the tobacco and raisins, sit sticky on the palate, allowing the whisky to linger longer. The spice, paired with a hint of ginger, also contributes to a medium-length finish.

A whisky that surprises me, as I would have expected a hogshead or bourbon cask aging. But the first thing you can clearly see is a sherry note. More specifically Oloroso. Fruity acidity and walnut. First thought: Awesome! He looks much older and very complex. On the palate then a nice sweetness, light leather note and malty. Also the Oloroso barrel comes through again (if it really is one, just my opinion). The finish is very long, with coffee, leather, candy floss and a dusty book spine (is Ben Nevis distillery character for me).

Great selection of casks: pleasant sherry influence without overpowering the Ben Nevis character. Would it be possible to have two ex-bourbon barrels and one ex-sherry barrel? Very complex both on the nose and on the palate with a nice leather note on the finish.

Conclusions. Quite a good whisky for an 8 year old. This is a rare case where the taste and aftertaste look much more solid than the aroma. This is, of course, a plus, but if we evaluate the release without concessions, then in terms of profile it still remains a young, perky whisky, albeit not entirely ordinary. Score 84

For the age and price this is really quite nice. Gotta love the Ben Nevis spirit - it's such a unique new make. Obvious refill sherry notes, which without water make the whisky quite bitter. Add a few drops, give it some time and it becomes a very balanced malt with the typical Ben Nevis funk which tends to disappear in the older bottlings. The 48% definitely help here - I'm sure if this was bottled at 46% or lower it wouldn't have held up as well. Definite recommendation if you can buy it for around €50.

On the nose, wild honey and typical Ben Nevis dirtiness, tart fruit like blood orange, heather. With a little time, it becomes sweeter, pastry notes. The initial dirtiness has changed into a beautiful, spicy tartness that forms an exciting combination with the sweeter pastry notes. Like it! But the youth is noticeable on the tongue: it is quite sharp and not particularly "broad". Again, bitter honey, slightly sizzling wood and a good shot of anise determine the taste and finish. I think the nose is great! Unfortunately, the taste and finish are noticeably lacking.

Very malty, like stout beer in whisky form. But then there's considerable bitterness behind it, and not much else. So I'm a bit disappointed; the predecessor was somehow better, in my opinion, despite being a year younger. Still, it's by no means a bad whisky.

Freshly mown). *2024* - 87 points Ben Nevis' character is there, but with a lot of impetuous youth. It seems very metallic and uneven. At first... Cellar mustiness. Iron. Sulphur. The whisky opens up more over time. Subtly fruity (bitter orange note). Buttery. Slightly meaty (umami). Malt. Later sweet vanilla. The fruit turns dark red and fully ripe. Toffee. Slightly drying. The herbs increase over time (herb meadow. Freshly mown). Sulphur, clay cellar and damp forest floor. In the middle of it all, a hint of citrus.
