В аромате доминируют торфяной дым, копчёное сало, дёготь, мокрая земля и морская соль, поверх которых лежит ромовая сладость — жареный ананас, тропические фрукты, цитрус, патока и ваниль. Вкус маслянистый и одновременно сладко-солёный: тяжёлый торф, копчёные пряности, чёрный перец, гриль-ананас и лимон, мёд и сахарный тростник; послевкусие от среднего до длинного, дымно-пепельное, с фруктовым сиропом и перечной остротой, у части дегустаторов сухое и слегка горчащее. Хвалят удачный брак дымного Islay (многие угадывают Caol Ila) с ромовой сладостью, доступную цену и питкость; несколько авторов отмечают лёгкое, уступающее носу тело.
Опытные ревьюеры сходятся плотно в районе 83–85, отмечая хорошую интеграцию ромового влияния и классических островных нот, богатство и вариативность аромата. Основное расхождение проходит по роли бочки из-под рома: одни считают её вклад органично встроенным (патока, тропики, сладость), другие — особенно в средних оценках 80 — ромового влияния не находят вовсе, критикуя металлическую молодость, нехватку крепости тела и специфическую горечь в послевкусии. Разброс оценок умеренный (в основном 80–87), общее согласие: это тяжёлый торфяной дистиллят для любителей дыма, а ромовый финиш — приятный, но не всеми различимый бонус.

I'm very impressed. A sweet and bitter whisky with lots of fruit, peat and smoke. The alcohol is completely undetectable, but warm at the very end. Besides, the price which is very affordable. Perfect whisky for evening meetings by the fireplace.
long, pleasant, quite sweet, vanilla roasted oak, a pinch of pepper, the tip are nice fruity accents.

It starts with a strong surge of smoked bacon and gum, followed by a heavy sweetness of molasses, before various fruits can be guessed by sniffing in deeper: banana, pear, liquorice, cocoa, a little camphor and olive herb.

Oily sweetness on the palate, some menthol with fiery stone, ripe pear and banana, smoked bacon, some oak spice, salmiak pastilles. The different aromas are very tasty side by side and always allow for new facets, which makes drinking enjoyment very varied. The whisky tolerates air very well.

Medium to long finish, with a dirty sweetness, yellow fruits and a very pleasant spice that ends in a long flow of saliva. The variety of flavors shows itself here once again in all its glory.

I don't like rum finishes, but this one is pretty good. Although it is somewhat spoiled by the peculiar bitterness.

Explosion of beautiful fresh and maritime peat from the first nose. It's violent, cavernous, smoky. Algae, scum, kelp, but also cold and damp stone, rust, fuel oil. We barely feel the barrels of rum, which give a pleasant little sweet side, on the grilled pineapple, the lemon pulp, the pastry cream. Successful marriage. Palate a little light, but soft, nice contrast with the aggressive nose. Thick peat, but also cane sugar, barley sugar, vanilla. It remains clear, despite some spices. Successful finish, quite long, lignite, cola, crushed banana. Peat hits you and dominates the port cask influences. Once the initial smoky, peaty reaction subsides, the rum influence of dark berries and tropical fruit, mango and papaya rise. Quite pleasant where the light fruity notes actually work well with the smoke note. Reminds me of an Ardbeg and in a blind tasting it would be easily mistaken for one.

Good young smoker, of course you can't taste the rum barrel again. More like a rather bitter note in the finish. Solid and tasty.

Suspect a Caol Ila that received a finish in rum barrels for a few months. The latter are responsible for the (molasses) sweetness and the tropical fruits. Easy to drink on a barbecue evening, not overly complex.

It’s a decent finished blend, strong smoke with canned pineapple and very peppery.
S 8 Hey, is this our old friend sherried Caol Ila with a new dress and extra peat? Anyways, rum plays a great role to add more molasses sweetness to complement the peat while keeping away the unnecessary spices that we usually get from rum casks. Good cask management. Yes, it’s very heavy, but if you’re a peathead, you won’t wanna miss this. [83-85] I'll get a bottle unless my bank account says otherwise. N 25 Smoked bacon. Sea water. Very heavy peat. Smoked tropical fruits (char-grilled pineapple and lime slides). P 25 Very sweet and peaty. Heavily smoked spices. Molasses and fruits. Sultana. More coastal breeze. Iodine. Still some citrusy but now at the background. A touch biscuity when diluted down. F 25 Mid-long, dry finish. Fruit & golden syrup lingering. The peat smoke is in its heart and it’ll make sure you never forget that.

Sweet sooty peat, tar, wet earth, sea salt, barbecued pineapple, honey, smoked meat, crushed pepper. The nose is slightly more complex than the palate, but this is rather delicious.

The Smokehead Rum Rebel Limited Edition is a limited 2020 bottling by independent bottler Ian MacLeod. With the Rum Rebel, the name says it all, because smoky Islay Single Malt meets exotic and sweet notes of the rum casks. There are many rumors about which distillery the casks that led to this strong and charismatic whisky came from. The names that fall in this context range from Lagavulin to Laphroaig to Caol Ila. The Smokehead Rum Rebel Limited Edition was bottled unfiltered with 46.0% vol.
